My friend is coming to JA for the first time and wants to read up on the history and architecture of Jamaica.
Does anyone have suggestions on books on the subject?
Thanks in advance.
A few of my favorite jamaica books are:
Rasta Heart: A Journey into One Love by Robert Roskind
Walk Good: Travels to Negril, Jamaica by Roland Thomas Reimer
and a fiction book Banana Shout by Mark Conklin.
I have lots of books about and set in Jamaica. I think the best history of JA I've seen is a fairly recent one: "The Story of the Jamaican People" by Philip M. Sherlock & Hazel Bennett. It is available at amazon.com and most major book outlets.
It is a much less Euro-centric than many history books about JA and tells the story of JA very well.
Don't know about architecture books.
J'ARCHITECTURE:
• Architectural Heritage of the Caribbean: An A-Z of Historic Buildings (Jamaica, covered specifically on pages 210-236)-Ian Randle Publishers, Kingston by Andrew Gravette
• Jamaica's Heritage: An Untapped Resource (A Preservation Proposal by Tourism Action Plan Ltd in collaboration with The Jamaican National Heritage Trust••Mill Press, Kingston, 1991) : Edited by Marguerite Curtin
• The Jamaican (Magazine): Collector's Editions feature back stories of individual parishes...Cookie Kincaid, photographer, and a TB mainstay, has contributed big-time to these issues.
Available in the larger bookstores like Sangsters.
