Too many of our students who are able to perform are logging behind, some interest need to be placed in these students. We have some resources and if focused in the right areas the grades could be improved.

Concern, you are correct. Helping students is a job both for the parents and the schools. Parental involvement is absolutely necessary because if families wait for the schools to do it all, it is too late. There are studies that show introducing books to a child at an early age is very important. It is also very important for the parents to take an active interest in their child at school, meaning attending PTA meetings and making sure their child has completed his homework assignments. If a child is very much behind the others in the classroom some individual attention can be given, but the reality is there is one teacher for about 35 students. If a child comes to school with a bad attitude and misbehaves this is a disruption to every other student in the class and is unfair, so parents need to be certain their child knows unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. Finally, I often think too much emphasis is put on MEMORIZING and GRADES instead of THINKING and UNDERSTANDING. If a child learns how to figure things out by himself the good grades will come.

Things has gotten a bit better at the primary level, however, much more can be done with the help of parents, the community and other aids. The majority of our students, after leaving high school are just sitting down, not qualified to go on to a tertiary institution. The emphasis needs to be placed at the basic level, Children are smart they just need the help. I must congratulate the Kennedys, they have been a tower of strength since they came to Treasure Beach, expecially when it comes to education. Perhaps other groups and individuals can consider helping some of the students who are struggling.

There is a programme similar to the GO GSAT, at CXC Examination.com, this programme could assist some of our high school students who are preparing for the CXC Examination.

Parents need to take more interest in education, when the child comes home, find out if the child has homework, ask them if they need help, you might cant help them, but seek help, and do the same on weekends. Some parents do not put much value on education, and so the child does likewise, very, very sad.

Too many of our youths are sufferinng from low self esteem and lack of confidence. I would encourage the youths to get involve, and participate in what is going on in the community.
