Here is some Rio Bueno information from Tank-Weld's website.

Rio Bueno Profile

Rio Bueno is reputed to be the first place that Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica , an
honour it shares with Discovery Bay. Located near the border of St. Ann and Trelawny. Rio Bueno is an under-developed, fishing community, its architecture is reminiscent of an old English village. There is little commercial activity in the town; and although it is reportedly linked to several prominent historical events, its value as a heritage site has not been exploited. The ability of Rio
Bueno to capitalize on the boom in tourism is limited, as the route for the North Coast Highway
by-passes the town.

The Tank-Weld Group has invested USD$50 Million for the purchase and development of the Rio Bueno Port in Trelawny. This includes the modification of the previous needle pier into a wharf, the construction of warehouses and some 10 acres of adjoining lands. Altogether including the Port, the land holding is 40 acres. This will be one of the most substantial investments made by a local company.

The acquisition will provide a platform for the expansion and consolidation of the Group's operations in the local construction and infrastructure sectors.

Development Overview:

The Rio Bueno Port is located in Trelawny, near to the border of Trelawny and St. Ann . It will be developed to facilitate the importation and distribution of steel, lumber, and cement. This development will no doubt spawn other business opportunities for Tank Weld and other investors. The site will comprise a modified wharf, warehouses, a distribution centre..

"NEPA, DO YOUR JOB": CITIZEN APPEAL-LOUD & CLEAR

RE: The Destruction of Jamaica's Natural Heritage:
(Letter to the Editor: Gleaner 2010𠪑)

Here we are again, with yet another plan in the wings to rape and destroy our natural heritage and indigenous plants and animals by mining/quarrying of Puerto Bueno Mountain - a beautiful and environmentally vital piece of our already staggering and ravaged little country.

I understand that an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) has not been done, and I would not be the least surprised if none ever is, and if one is in fact done, then it will almost certainly be approved by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).

I hope that the people living nearby will object in the loudest and most visible way possible. I hope that someone with some [edited by TB.Net] and some clout in this matter will stand up and say, "Enough of the destruction of our precious irreplaceable wildlife and beautiful natural habitat by mining and quarrying or anything else."

There has to be a limit and we have reached and passed it. We are small and cannot sustain this type of destruction.

There will be nothing left of beauty, no wildlife, and nothing to attract visitors here but concrete and gaping, dusty holes where green mountains and their very precious inhabitants once lived.

If NEPA sits by and allows this one, what hope is there for any kind of natural, living environment in Jamaica in the near or distant future?

NEPA, do your job!

I am, etc....SADAN TAYAD

I posted earlier in the week about this line and am wondering why it wasn't put up. All I said was the Tank-Weld people are the same people who hired the wall to be built in Old Wharf. A fact. Nothing slanderous - just a fact. Are we only talking what what is pretty and nice? If that is the case then no one will know what is happening to de-grade the environment and soon there will be no pretty and nice.

If the message only had the text you say, then we would have approved it. However the extra text or the name listed made the message inappropriate.

Without assuming anyone's position on the issue, just wanted to share that there is an online petition to preserve the Puerto Bueno site "as a living laboratory for scientific research and education, a reservoir of biodiversity, a spectacular natural landscape, and a source of enjoyment and economic benefits through ecotourism."

If you'd like to sign the petition, or learn more, please visit this link: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/PROTECT-Puerto-Bueno-Mountain-Jamaica

I've just signed the petition and would urge everyone else who accesses this site to do the same. Words alone cannot describe how I feel.

There is. Those that wish to protect Pretty & Nice.

OK, not organised, but a significant group with legitimate concerns.
