Does TB have wireless internet connectivity? If so, which server is the most reliable?

There is high speed internet available in TB, specifically DSL via phone line. I believe it is all provided by CWJ, though I could be wrong.

To go wireless, you have to attached a wireless access device to the DSL modem. A common access point is a router.

In order to access this wireless signal on your laptop (or desktop for that matter), you have to be in range of the access point and have the password if it requires one. Several guesthouses/villas offer this service and I would imagine private homes do as well. Perhaps there are businesses which do as well.

Hope this helps,
Eric

PS: Could this be the shortest Turey post ever??? Call Guinness! :-)

Button Bay Beach Getaway has WIFI. We haveour own satalite connection. It has nothing to do with DSL or Cable & Wireless (LIME)

Villa Hikaru has a DSL connection and will -- when I get there next weekend -- have a wi-fi router so a wi-fi connection will be available anywhere in the house or on the patio.

Turey, internet connectivity is a continuing problem in T/B. Some of the hotels and villas use satellite service for their internet. This is faster and more reliable than any of the landline services offered by C&W (Lime). The downside is cost. It is very expensive and the more you use the more expensive the monthly bill is. My guess is places providing this service will only allow paying guests to use it. That new Digicel service is not yet available in T/B; services like that are normally rolled out in the more densely populated areas and take ages to hit places like T/B. If a place has wifi you can sometimes pick up the signal by not staying there, maybe sitting on the beach. A lot of villa owners are getting smart about people using their systems and have added password protection and more.

Not to beat a dead horse but, since Eric wasn't sure, is there another Company other than CWJ that provides DSL? Also does anyone know what type of router would be compatible (if I were to bring my own) or does the router have to be obtained locally?

Some places (Button Bay for one) have a satellite connection which uses a 'bird in the sky' to get its signal as opposed to DSL which uses a 'wire in the ground'. From there, they both connect to a modem which sends the signal to either a single computer or to a router which can then have multiple computers connected to it.

In general, it should not matter what router you have. If it were me, I'd find out what router is already there and make sure it works with my laptop/computer. Or if you're bringing one, test the combination before you leave.

Also, I've heard that the current speed of DSL has been very slow over the past weeks. It sounds like it is either too many connections on the circuit or poor quality hardware (cable, switches, etc) that is degrading the signal to the area.

Either way, plan for slow speeds.

Good luck.

High speed in Treasure Beach is kind of like dial up in the US. The big difference is the phone lines here don't go out nearly as often.
