I'd recommend Irie Rest, Serenity Lodge, and Nuestra Casa if you're looking for rooms. Villa Arcadia is a lovely but inexpensive villa.

Sunsplash Villa - our favorite place!

I always wonder what someone means when they use the words cheap or inexpensive. It could mean something to me and quite a different thing to the writer. I feel we could provide more informed answers if someone said something like "I need a place for $100 a day or less for two adults and two small children in two separate bedrooms and it must have a self-catering kitchen and be within an easy 5 minute walk to the beach" or something like that.

I agree with "Cheap"
It is always better to actually say what price range you are looking for.

Golden Sands is reasonable, close to almost everything and real nice. stayed there a couple of times.

Stayed at Nuestra Casa a few months ago. Wasn't impressed with the standard of cleanliness especially in the bathroom area. The shower curtain had black mould all over it. Verandah was filthy too; it wasn't swept in the 2weeks I was there even though there were enough hints.Would never recommend it to anyone and certainly wouldn't stay there again. {edited by TBNet{

Calabash House is reasonable. So is Fairhill Villa. Both are close to the 'action' and the sea.

Should have mentioned Calabash House. It probably should have been my first choice and I forgot to mention it. If a villa, I would still go with Villa Arcadia for a good low cost place.

As one who has been retrained to British Columbia's women's standard of cleanliness, I would suggest inviting one of the ladies to stay a night in various facilities and give feedback.

My greatest sin: Hair in the face basin. The neighbourhood was buzzing for weeks (-;

Chlorine bleach should kill any mold. It's that black or green stuff that grows in wet areas. Inhaled spores from them can cause health problems.

Most of us in Ja think nothing of insects aka 'bugs', except maybe flies, mosquitos and roaches. Many sprays do more harm than the insects. Starve them, no stray food, no roaches and flies. Do lignum vitae branches really work to keep flies away?

And Pest Control! Lizards are not insects and killing them is unnecessary, they eat many flying and other insects and keep them at bay. Hey ladies, get over those programmed phobias, they are friendly creatures, even the dreaded croaker.

I hope Nuestra Casa corrects any faults and invites guests to check them.

To Stayed there....you said there were enough 'hints' given at Nuestra Casa...maybe it's just me but instead of 'hints' why did you not just come out and ask them to sweep? To me, that is the same as someone coming up to me and whispering about something they are complaining about but God forbid the person that might be able to do something about it hears them. Just sayin'

Irie Rest, Shakespeare Cottage, and Vikings house all have decent rooms cheap. As far as I know only Irie Rest has screens and AC in that price range.

Bug screens on all windows in an establishment can be very important if you don't want to be bitten. We stayed in a place where there were screens on some of the windows but not on others. That meant bugs still came in and they ended up in our room and we got bitten badly when we were sleeping. Some may say mosquito netting is enough but I find it less than foolproof and a real pain to use. Plus it only protects you when you are in bed and not very well even then.

Nuestra Casa charges $35US to $50US a night per room
why should anyone have to ask their hosts at that price or any price to sweep the floor - isn't that what you are paying for?

Mopping with vinegar or citrus water saves the lungs from particles and organisms in dust from sweeping that can trigger allergies and cause infections. On a wooden floor I polish with a beeswax and turpentine blend. Added essential oils are allways appreciated.

Yes ladies, I rule my kitchen and control mops, brooms and cleaning cloths. Some may be allowed to cut veg or stir a pot.

Most of my guests come from rush and haste, I prefer you all to cool out, enjoy and let me know if my cooking and cleaning are up to par.

In Billys Bay. Not on the seaside. Kind of opposite the Bucaneer.

englyshgyrl: Check out the Inn at Great Bay. I'd stay there if I were by myself. It seems really nice and the prices are right. Great Bay beach is at your front door.

Yes Jeannie, "Great " choice. We stayed there for 3 weeks in January and it was fantastic. Good location, beautiful view, can't say enough about the place but most of all what a great host (and cook) Alex is. we're still working on photos/trip report. Alex can be reached at 876-879-6970

If you are young and looking to party at night and hang on the beach during the day,and be where the action is, then NEGRIL will be the place for you.
But if you are looking for a more quiet, peaceful place, then Treasure Beach is the place.
ONE LOVE !!

I stayed at Nuestra Casa in October for 10 days and thoroughly enjoyed my stay, including the attention to the care of the house and the cleanliness of my room, so it surprises me to find negative comments about the cleanliness. I had no complaints about the condition of the house. As far as the verandah, I have to say that one of the things I loved about the verandah was the "debris" in the form of fallen bougainvillea blossoms that blew across the floor. Glad those didn't get swept out! I'm not saying that "Stayed There" didn't have valid concerns. We weren't there at the same time, so I have no idea what he or she experienced. I'm just saying that I hope people won't just a property by one person's assessment. Anika, Jeremy and Kanute took wonderful care of me and the house, and I would recommend NC to anyone looking for a quiet, peaceful, pretty place to say with a gorgeous view of the sea.

Me and my small daughter have stayed at the following and found them to be very suitable and reasonably priced:
1-Fairhill
2-Shakepeare(newer houses)
3-Treasure Trove Cottage(Coot's)

Shakespeare is very clean and a short walk to the beach.

Fairhill is very clean, windows have screens, short walk to everything but very sparsely furnished.

Treasure Trove Cottage is directly on the beach, close to everything(restaurants, clubs, etc) and is well furnished/decorated.
All, except, Treasure Trove Cottage tel# 876-895-3363; advertise on this website so you can locate their contact info by clicking on the Where to Stay Banner.

I definitely second the recommendation of Treasure Trove Cottage. The house is great, and Blossom's new restaurant location is just half a step away at the edge of the beach, Eggy's bar just down the beach a little ways. It's a great location!

Is this Miss Blossom from up the road past King Fisher Plaza? Ih, I hope so. I always loved going to eat at her place, even if she was always 'poka poka' :-)

Do you mean Winsome's restaurant located right on the beach in front of Treasure Trove and next to Golden Sands?

Winsome is always cooking up great food my favorite being chicken adobe. But what I really love about her place is her homemade juices. Carrot, cucumber, watermelon, etc.!

Stayed in all three Buildings at Shakespeare Cottage. All very clean with screens on windows and prices very reasonable.

Staff and owner friendly and caring. A real home away from home.
