Looking for car hire recommendations out of Mo Bay. Who are the best car hire people?

We suggest you not rent through a U.S. affiliate of a large U.S. rental company; if push comes to shove you may discover the Jamaican company is not really affiliated with its American counterpart. For instance, the quoted rate may not be what you really receive; or if your flight arrives late, the company may be shut for the night, leaving you stranded at the airport.

We can recommend renting a vehicle through a MoBay company, Beaumont Car Rental & Tours. They can provide you with compact autos such as a Toyota or a Honda. We find these quite adequate for a party of four, and they seem to run forever on a gallon of petrol. Beaumont can also supply you with larger vehicles, including a minibus. Rather than be concerned about the vehicle brand, ask about the other choices: automatic vs. manual; air conditioned vs. not; and cassette/CD player vs. just a radio.

The person we deal with is David Peterkin; (he goes by “Peter”). He will meet you at the airport in MoBay and take you directly to your car. He can be reached at 876/813-5932 or 876/899-5416. If it will be your first time driving in MoBay and you’re not familiar with it, you can ask Peter if he’ll lead you on the road toward the south coast in another vehicle for the first few miles of your journey; this can help prevent you from getting fairly lost and end up in downtown MoBay instead of bypassing it.

In Jamaica, you should not expect the free CDW (collision damage waiver) insurance you are probably used to receiving when paying by major credit card, especially a gold or platinum card. Therefore, expect to pay in the range of an additional $15 - $20 U.S. per day. In any case, be sure to get confirmation of CDW coverage from the car rental company, your credit card provider, and your own insurance company—in advance—or you may be in for a nasty financial shock. However, if you elect not to carry CDW, your financial shock could be considerably worse due to the exorbitant costs of vehicle repairs in Jamaica. (In addition to the cost of repairs you will also be billed for all the time the rental vehicle is out of commission—another unexpectedly high expense.)

Please know that a 17.5 percent GCT (General Consumption Tax) will be added to your car rental bill (as well as most other purchases made in Jamaican stores); it's a strict law, and it can't be avoided.

I can vouch for Hertz and Budget, been renting with them for years, no problem, freindly service. They are located at the Airport. Don't have to rent from their American affiliate. You can call them direct in Mobay. You can find the number for all their Jamaican locations at their websites or you can make a reservation online with them. You pay no money online when you book. All money transactions are done when you are at their location in Jamaica.

Hmmmmmm...We rented (or rather booked and had confirmation) through Thrifty. I would highly recommend NOT! trying to rent through them. Once we arrived, all of a sudden they did not have our vehicle but could upgrade us at quite a hefty price increase..what a surprise (rolling eyes here) and were trying to do the same thing to anther family at the same time.

I walked two counters down to Island Car Rentals, who had told us via e-mail they were fully booked, and lucked out with a vehicle that had been returned early...at a $200 savings from our original quote from Thrifty (same vehicle).

Island Car Rental was fantastic...we extended our stay an extra day and they didn't charge us anything extra. I would recommend them.

We've been very happy for years with AllStar Rent-a-Car (which began long ago as Anna's). They maintain their cars well, and in two rare cases of need have quickly sent someone over with a replacement (not everyone knows where Treasure Beach is!) Off-airport, but Elise Gopaulsingh or one of her colleagues will meet you at the airport and make short work of paperwork.

This is all extremely helpful, thanks to those providing information. Another Guest, have you any contact particulars for Thaddeus in Beacon? I can envisage having the host villa arrange transport from MoBay to Treasure Beach and back, but then wanting to hire a car in the area so as to be able to move around during the stay. Or perhaps there are other options available in or near Teasure Beach?

We have been renting from Apex Car Rentals for the last 15 years
and have found the staff to be extremely courteous especially
the owner Rena. The price is reasonably and they offer a wide
variety of vehicles. We were give a bereavement discount
When we lost a family member and that was great. We will always
