Shanice Powell and Imani Clough are in year 12 of Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Birmingham, England. They are currently doing their A-levels.
Shanice’s father, the late Junior Anthony Powell, was born in Junction (St. Elizabeth) and moved to Birmingham when he was 15. He died when Shanice was quite young. Shanice’s grandmother (her nan) moved back to Junction about 12 years ago. Shanice and her family visited over Christmas 2008 and spent two weeks Jamaica, staying in Treasure Beach along with Shanice’s nan at Lyric Villa. Imani’s family is also from Jamaica (St. Thomas), but she hasn’t visited Jamaica in the last few years.
At school, these two young ladies attend a weekly afternoon activity called enrichment, and they chose to be part of an enrichment group called “Envision.” Envision works with young people to help make a difference. Eventually, they choose to raise money for Treasure Beach because they are familiar with the area. Shanice told me “raising money for the children of Treasure Beach means a lot to us, as we both have personal connections with the country.” They selected Treasure Beach Foundation because of the work we do to help provide an education for young people in Treasure Beach.
The fundraising done by these two includes several different activities. They will to go into four local primary schools (in Birmingham) and do a presentation on Treasure Beach and how school life differs from theirs in England. They will also hold a cake sale and a raffle.
On December 22nd, Shanice and Imani did their own personal fundraising—a sponsored walk dressed as Santas. (They had wanted to do a three-legged walk but it had snowed the day before, and the bad weather made their walk take twice as long as they originally planned.) They handed out Treasure Beach Foundation brochures and were able to raise around £100; they feel their walk was well worth the effort. (We certainly agree!)

They are planning to do more fundraising in February and March—and they feel they will be able to raise a good deal more money by the end of March. Shanice added, “With God’s blessing we might even be able to return to Treasure Beach and hand over the money in person.”
I take my hat off to these two enterprising young ladies who are working so hard to help others, and I am certainly looking forward to meeting them in person.
This is a wonderful and unselfish thing these two ladies are doing. I know the money they are raising will be used for our scholarship children, and that is also a beautiful thing. Everyone wins in this instance.
VERY nice.
This is so heart warming, and encouragement. I wish these exemplary young ladies nothing less than complete success.
Well done, Shanice and Imani! It's great to see you getting out there to raise funds for a very worthy cause. As a supporter of TB (and fellow Brummie!), I would love to buy some of your raffle tickets - just click on my name above to email me details.
Keep up the good work! Love the pictures!
Shanice and Imani, you are shining examples for us all. Your smiling faces show us very clearly that when you give you also receive.
Wishing you great sucess and may this be the start of a lifetime habit of volunteerism.
As another member of the Board of Directors of the Treasure Beach Foundation, I want to thank Shanice and Imani for their wonderful work. I hope that one day we will see our successful scholarship graduates following in their foot steps and giving back to the community we all love.
What darling and caring young women!
This is an example of how young people in the world demonstrate they care and make a profound effort to help others who are less fortunate. May God Bless You.
Wow! You girls are fantastic! It was truly thoughtful of you to share with the children of Treasure Beach. I love your Santa outfits! Is that snow on the ground there? I do hope you will be able to make the trip to hand over the money personally. Keep up your marvelous work! You make me feel hopeful.
Great story! These enterprising young woman are an inspiration. I know the children of TB appreciate every dollar.
Love the santa suits!
I LOVE this story. It reminds me of the Making A Difference pieces we often see after the evening news.
Treasure Beach Foundation is making a difference in TB, and these lovely young ladies are certainly doing their part. Great work all around.
There are so many unsung heroes in Treasure Beach. These two ladies are among them. One of the things I like best about this forum is it gives a place to tell about what some unselfish people are doing to make others happy. These people would never post anything on their own because they do what they do out of love, not because they are seeking publicity. I am glad others recognize their contributions and post them here so we can all appreciate the many kindnesses performed in our community. This is part of what makes Treasure Beach such a very special place.
This story makes me feel warm, and that's a big deal because it's freezing where I live.
Thank you ladies!
This goes to show that everyone really can make a difference - no matter your location, age, level of education, or wealth. Keep up the good work ladies - thanks for inspiring me to follow in your footsteps.

Hello Shanice and Imani, it means a lot to have YOUR support. I am quite impressed with what you are doing for the children of Treasure Beach. Blessings to both of you.
How refreshing to see what young people can do to assist each other. Let us never forget we are ALL God's children.
Shanice and Imani, words cannot sufficiently express our gratitude to you for your thoughtfulness and kind gesture. May you be richly blessed in all your endeavours. This thought comes to mind as I think of the love and concern you have demonstrated for the students of Treasure Beach.
"'tis not the wealth that we possess
Nor the heights to which we rise
But the good we do to others
That lives beyond the skies."
Fondest regards-Sandy Bank Primary School Family

HI, just to let you all now, that shanice and I are putting the fundraising on hold for a while; as we have AS exams coming up very soon. However, we are continuing with the fundraising in the summer. we plan to... hire a hall for approximately 50 people, close family/friends and we are going to have food (£5 a plate, music and a presentation to let people know more about treasure beach foundation; with the opportunity to make their own additional personal donations. Once again we thankyou all for your support and we will keep you up to date with pictures from our fundraiser in the summer!
You young ladies are wonderful. Thanks for letting us know what is happening. All the best on your AS exams.
This is so wonderful, especially for teenagers. All to often I see young people with a feeling of entitlement thinking the world owes them. These young ladies will reap many rewards from the unselfish seed they have sown.
