Just as a reminder, please check out all employment agencies through the Ministry of Labor to make sure they are registered as, unfortunately, there are many scams operating right now.

That's most likely below the poverty line. Accommodation? Taxes? Expenses? Beware!!! Lots more info needed.

There are more than two dozen people in the district who are currently in what appears to be a scam involving getting work in the USA. Together they have paid more than JA$100,000. The truth is the economy is so bad in America that their residents are now willing to do most anything just to be able to keep a little food on the table. Another thing to remember is even though pay is much higher in America, the cost of living is also very high and medical care costs a lot. Please be very careful before you believe something that is too good to be true because it usually IS too good to be true.

This just screams "scam". Why would anyone in the USA take the time and expense to bring people in from Jamaica to be lifeguards?

Especially for such a short contract...especially for MORE than minimum wage...etc.

It just doesn't make sense.

I think they'd have a line out the door right now if they simply advertised this in the local paper at home.

I agree Easton714. The season for pools to be open in America is roughly 3 months which is 13 weeks. Assume 40 hours a week for the 13 weeks which is a total of 520 hours. At $8 per hour, this calculates to $4,160 which SEEMS like a lot. Now, deduct the fee to the employment agency, deduct the cost of someone filling out the visa application, deduct the cost to the US Embassy for the visa application, deduct the cost of going to Kingston for the appointment, deduct the cost of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, deduct the cost of the airfare to and from America. Then when or IF you get there, you will have to pay for a place to stay, food, and transport to work every day. You will have to pay for any doctor appointments or medicine or a stay in the hospital. Your pay will also be about 25% less than what your wages are because taxes are taken from your pay by law in America.

Lifeguard positions are normally taken by college students in America. These students cannot hardly find any work and they are happy to get any work. They are living with their families

I live in upstate New York , Born and raised in TB, where I see alot of Apple farm workers from Jamaica come and go. they usualy live on the farms and they make out ok, however, I have also seen other kind of workers come up such as fast food, and live-in care-takers, and I have to say those workers get paid and treated very badly. The companies will pay your airfair and travel, but they take it all back as you get paid, they take room and board they take taxes, some even take ot for food, and by the time you get paid every week or biweek your pay is next to nothing. My point is do your research and ask questions, and if there is a contract read it carefully before you sign it, and if possible get a friend/family to read it as well, good luck everyone, a friend abroad

No matter what the official statistics posted by the Jamaican Government on tourism say, all you have do to is look around to see how few tourists are here in Treasure Beach. Why? People are out of money, and their first responsibilities are to feed their families and pay their rent and bills, not to take vacations.

They are definitely out of money if they are unemployed. If they still have a job they are thankful for it, and they are much more cautious about spending.

New unemployment figures for the U.S. were released today. In Washington, D.C. the rate was 11.9% for October. Nationally, the U.S. unemployment rate in October was 10.2%, up from 9.8% in September and 6.6% in October 2008. This does not count the people who have given up looking for work. This doesn't count the people who have part-time work so they are not actually unemployed.

I know nothing about the employment agency listed above. They may be a wonderful firm (or they may not be). But common sense tells me there are MILLIONS of Americans who are willing to take ANY kind of work.

My advice for Jamaicans is not to look for work abroad unless it is in the skilled sector (such as registered nurses or engineers). If you do, still be certain to exercise a great deal of caution.

My advice for people in Treasure Beach is to treat each and every tourist with the utmost respect. These visitors are like gold to all of us.

Dear Andrew S, when you post something people assume it is from you. If someone you didn't know well called you and then followed up with an email, why didn't you tell them to post it without your intervention? Since you live in Treasure Beach are you unaware that employment scams have been going on for years on end?
