They are so needed in Jamaica. I wish I had the $$$ to start a shelter in St. Bess.

These animal shelters are much needed in Jamaica. If you want to contribute to one don't feel like you have to give lots of money. All charities are grateful for any donations they get even if they are tiny. I know Treasure Beach Foundation is happy to get my $5 or $10. They are set up to take as little as $5 online if I use My Master Card. This is not a push to give them money instead of for the animals but it tells you people are happy with whatever you can afford.
Another thing that concerns me is how some animals are treated in T/B. I hardly ever see female dogs given the same kind of respect and care as male dogs except for maybe female dogs like Flora who go out to the Pelican Bar or Millie from Jakes. Mostly people want male dogs and are not willing to spend the money to have a female dog spayed. I also feel so bad when someone tells me their dog got poisoned because it wandered on to someones property. I am not talking about dogs who kill goats and chickens just friendly dogs who are taking a little walk. I think looking out out for our faithful animals is something everyone in T/B needs to do. We all need to respect life.

I am also an animal lover. It makes me feel like crying when I come visit and sometimes I learn that someone's dear pet has been poisoned or hit by a car on purpose. Senseless and cruel.

I have heard people say that they will not take a female because it is too much trouble. Hopefully there will be more cheap spay / neuter services available.

I have family who had a much loved family pet poisoned. He was a great dog.

But, maybe if they could have had him neutered he would not have left the yard.

People think about this before you get harsh and start to pass judgement.

Many of the families in Treasure Beach struggle to feed their family, and send the pickney to school. It is especially hard in the offseason for many residents of Treasure Beach. If faced with the choice of your family eating or neutering your dog - which would you pick?

Why have a dog then you say?

Most Jamaicans keep dogs not as pets to play with, but as guard dogs so that the family knows when someone comes in the yard. In fact you will notice that they do not pat them and touch them as most foreign people do, keeping a dog in Jamaica is more like having a security system in your home.

It is important for visitors to remember that your values and priorities are not necessarily the same as those of the Jamaican people, who live a different life and have a different culture. Is that not one of the reasons that you come to Jamaica?

You make an good point about the culture being different. People here in the U.S. are now giving away pets they've had for years because they cannot afford to feed them any more in this economy. If a Jamaican dog is more valued for being a watchdog than a pet, why let harm come to your investment? Why let your security system get killed?
