Here is the story from Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday for 23 October 2009:

Four men in court for having $8M worth of ganja

The men were arrested Monday morning when 876 kilogrammes of marijuana were seized on board a pirogue named Uncle Sam. The sea vessel was intercepted by officials of the Dutch warship Von Spic.

After three days of questioning, Carlton Taylor aka David Jones of Calabash Bay, St Elizabeth, Jamaica; Roger Bertrand aka Franklin Noel of Rampanalgas Village, Toco; Fred Amoroso of Bay Road, Salybia; and Allan Thomas of Santa Cruz, were all brought yesterday before Magistrate Lucina Cardinas-Ragoonanan in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ 4A Court.

They were charged with importing prohibited goods, possession of a dangerous drug for the purposes of trafficking, and possession of prohibited goods onboard a vessel on the high seas. Noel, captain of the vessel, was also slapped with the additional charge of leaving the country without making the required declarations to customs officials.

Defence attorney Patrick Godson-Phillips represented Taylor and Thomas. However, he was unsuccessful in his application for bail.

The attorney argued the two men were not flight risks and had significant ties to the country. He also said Taylor was prepared to surrender his passport, and comply with any restrictions imposed by the court. The attorney also asked the court to consider that the State had failed to provide background tracing on any of the accused despite the length of time the men were in custody.

Prosecuting attorney, Harricharan Cassie, rejected these arguments, saying until the background tracings were provided, all the accused men should be considered as flight risks. He pointed out specifically Taylor, who had given separate names to officials, making it clear in the State’s mind of his intentions if he was released.

Cassie then requested for an additional day for the State to produce background tracings on all four men, explaining the reason it was not yet available was because various State agencies were involved in the investigatory stages of the matter.

He however assured the court it would be prepared by today.

In light of this, Cardenas-Ragoonanan, adjourned the matter for the information to be provided to the court. All four men are expected to return to court today. The exhibits, valued at close to $8.76 million, comprised of 53 bags of marijuana which were brought yesterday to the courthouse in a truck.

I am really trying to understand why people take such huge risks knowing before that if they get caught they will have to suffer the consequences of shame both on themselves, and family. The benefits does not equate with the chance of being caught and the hardships they will have to suffer.

Carlton Taylor AKA David Jones use to live in Sandy Bank during the 90's. To my knowledge he had moved to Barbary Hall and that was his base when he was not in Latin America or the Eastern Caribbean.

Now is not the time to say negative things. It is time to rally around the family, give them all the love and support they so badly need at this time. Let's continue to keep the family in our prayers. Parents, let us continue to pray for each other's children because when trouble is coming it does not toot a horn. To the family, I am a mother and you are in my prayers. Please bare in mind I am not justifying what Carlton did but I am not going to condemn him.

Aren't we all adults? Can't we see the 'keyhole' before we 'buck'? These are not negative things -this is constructive criticism/feedback. Let us let go off the 'get rich quick' mentality and try to focus on the simple things of life. Why do we have to do the things that will get us into 'hot water' and is not worth it?
Now this is it - there are lots of lessons to be learnt from this and I hope TB has learnt. I am praying for the family because they are the ones who have to suffer because of this. Let us not look at it as being bad mind. All of us grow up in families that care for us and when we make wrong decisions the family is really really hurt. TB is one big gungo tree so we all wish each other well.

I definately don't condone the crime but I do remember being told that a close friend in Guyana was considering selling drugs to make some money. He had lost his job and although was getting sporadic work here and there as a mechanic it was no where near what he had been making on a sailing ship. I was floored that he of all people would have ever considered selling drugs, but after some thought it occurred to me that he was desperate. It doesn't make it the 'right' way to make some money to support his family but I certainly can understand how desperate he may have been.
I say, 'don't judge someone until you have walked a mile in his mocassins"

To Patsy & family my heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow have faith.here is poem for you

A mother's touch
Speaks thousand words of comfort
and in her smile a forgotten
courage comes alive

Here undying love
Gives a child wings of strength
Whislt in the bed of her tender eyes
Hope confidently flowers

A mother's heart
Knows not only hatred for her child
And her angelic presence slowly
Brings a change in life

Mother, she is
A gentle affection to hold and to embrace
And words never get exhausted
Praising her name.

for the good job they are doing in getting rid of these destructive scourges from society, pray for the young lives these people are destroying.
Let us support our local law enforcement in getting rid of those within our community that engage in these unlawful activities.

We are pulled and prodded by so many impulses Think Before. Constantly. Even in the escape of sleep, our dreams influence us.

Hunger and thirst, the need for warmth, ease from pain etc.

These are needs. Requirements for a good life and survival.

Our wants are mostly brawta. Pretty clothes, big house, bling, nice car are the material ones. Our emotions also cry for attention, variety and entertainment are spices of life and keep the brain alert and flexible. To a point.

The ability to DELAY GRATIFICATION of wants and be aware of the difference between wants and needs allows us to focus our energy and keeps us from wasting time and resources, ours and our community.

To see some around us luxuriate in their satisfied wants wakes envy, jelousy and greed.

To keep these impulses in their cages is part of our growing up.

Where are such basic and simple things being taught outside of The Each One Teach One U and it's cousins?

But, if the resources are not available to satisfy needs, something is wrong. Somewhere.

That is true Cousin - TB although we are one gungo tree - some people rejoice over others misfortunes. Now is not the time to rejoice over one's misfortunes but to pray for the young man and his family for strength, endurance and support them through this difficult time. Everyone has got to learn from their mistakes and that includes us all. After all is said and done - absolutely no one is perfect - not even the preacher man!

People are entitled to have an opinion and to express their opinions.

The fact that the family is probably quite embarrassed over the actions of one of their family members should serve as an important reminder that when someone chooses to do something illegal they are likely to involve many more people than themselves. [edited by TB.Net]
Having a family member accused of a serious crime does not mean the family did anything wrong. We all know families who raised each of their children with love and concern, not favoring any one child over the other. Yet, each child turned out differently, some excelling and some disappointing. If being a good parent was the only thing that determined how a child turned out, it would be a lot easier to be a parent. Anyone with children knows this isn't true. Being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. We all know people who did their best but had a child who grew up to do things which were less than nice. We all know parents who were not considered good examples but their child turned out to be a fine person. Sometimes it is the luck of the draw.

The man involved is an adult. I presume he did whatever he did of his own free will, not because any possible criminal activity was suggested or supported by his family.

This is the point when people should gather round the family and give them support and sympathy. They need to hear positive things from their friends and from the entire community.

The man will, if he is guilty of the crimes charged, have to suffer the consequences of his own actions. If this is the case, the family will be sad but they can still hold their heads high.

I knew this young man, and also his family. This is a very respectful family, and I think that we all should sympitized with them. No one is perfect. The guy made a mistake and was caught. So for God sake, let us pray for the famalies of those guys. Remember, he's not the only one that was caught. I think that anyone of us can get into trouble, sometimes we found ourselves in some difficult situation and God help us through, so let us not pass any judgement PLEASE,PLEASE. The word of God say we must bear each other's problem. My prayer is for those men that God will grant unto them comfort. Wrong is wrong, but thank God that is not a life that has been lost.

TRUE PEACE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF WAR; IT IS THE PRESENCE OF GOD.

To T/B.NET. If I have said something that I should not have said, please take it out, but please, publish my post. thank you.

Yes Turey, many believe ganja should be legalized. If it was legal I'm sure there would not be so much profit, the men would not be doing anything wrong, and they would then be subjected to being taxed on their earnings which would help out each country involved.

The seriousness of the crime is in the eye of the beholder or as Turey put it in the eye of the government for that particular country. Many would use the words of Peter Tosh by saying "Legalize It!".

Dickens rolled in his grave at the censorship of his well known paragraph.

I had to explain to him that times had changed and one has to be careful of the context in which his words are used.

The law tries to be equitable and fair. As laws are made by man, their evolution is dependent on our growing understanding of various issues.
