Lashawn Smith, son of Shanique Moxam of Sandy Bank, was born on October 8, 2007 prematurely. At six weeks he began to turn blue and was admitted to the Bustamante Children's Hospital in Kingston. There he spent nine days doing several examinations and tests. He was then diagnosed with Dextrocardia Type I Truncus Arterosis. He was put on the following medications; lasix, aldactone, and digoxia twice a day.

Since then he has been to several doctors and hospitals. He is a regular patient at the Bustamante Children's Hospital and is also seeing Dr. William Foster at the Medical Associates in Kingston.

Lashawn has been to Miami and the Dominican Republic since December 2008 to do a Cardiac Catherization where they came up wit a different diagnosis, "double outlet right ventricule with pulmonary atresy and no confluents small pulmonary branches common atrioventicular septal defect small right ventricule".

After seeking for several months to get surgery in the States for Lashawn he was finally accepted by Dr. William Novick to do open heart surgery. It will be a series of three surgeries, the first one costing $5,000 US.

This is a major undertaking and major expense. We would appreciate any assistance you can give us whether in monetary donations, advice, and especially prayers. We are currently organizing a fund raising event and will let you know when it is going to happen.

Anyone interested in donating towards Lashawn's surgery can do so by making a deposit or wire transfer to the following bank accounts:

Shanique
I have contacted the Leaf of Life Foundation, hopefully we should hear word soon. This foundation was founded by a friend, a Jamaican who has helped several children from Jamaica and other parts of the West Indies.
Help is coming soon, I pray.
Friend of Little Children.

Hi Shanique my prayers are with you and your family once again your family has to go through this sad ordeal, after losing your Uncle Kenrick Moxam so suddenly in June. I wish you the very best of luck with your fundraising. I also hope that you can raise enough funds to do all three surgeries. As a nurse in the USA, I realize the seriousness of his diagnosis.

So, my fellow Jamaicans please let's send a few dollars down Treasure Beach way to help this young woman save her son's life. I know this family well, they would not have asked for monetary help if this child's life was not at great risk.

I am donating 50,000 Jamaican dollars. So please, can anyone else match this? Imagine how lucky most of us are to have healthy and happy children. Just imagine if you were in Shanique's position...with the possibility of losing your baby to a condition that could have been corrected with financial support? Please reach into your heart and offer your support to give this innocent child a chance at life.

Thank you and God Bless.

I was so impressed with the determination and tenacity Shanique showed when telling me of her experiences with Lashawn since his birth. She sounded like a doctor herself rattling off these long complicated medical terms and telling me of their experiences in the Dominican Republic, their many trips to Kingson and so on.

Shanique you have earned my absolute respect and I wish you and Lashawn all the best in your quest to get these operations. I know that if you can make it on will and determination you will make it. I gave my donation today for the 1st operation and you can count on at least two more donations from me for the two other operations.

May God bless you both.

May I suggest that you contact Montefiore Childrens Hospital located at 3415 Bainbridge Ave, Bronx NY 10467 (USA) tel 011-718-714-2426.
They have one of the best childrens hospital in the US. Additionally they do many charitable treatments for children from developing countries. They assist with sponsorship and hosting the child's family for the duration of the treatment. They have a first rate cardiac department. Below are links for the hospital that may be helpful, I wish you and your baby all the best.
