I just received this email for Nathalie Zenny and thought many of you may be interested. I have very fond memories of experiencing the most amazing snorkeling I have ever seen in Jamaica around this island. Of course, that was about 12 - 14 years ago.

Please take 3 minutes and look at this very well put-together slideshow by Marc Goodman, a Jamaican citizen, about the proposed development on Pellew (Monkey) Island in Portland, on the northeast coast of Jamaica.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tswp_4-hPaQ

Please send it around, and more importantly, contact your representatives and interested parties, as detailed in the movie, if you are concerned about this.

Hi Rebecca, I am alarmed, that none of TB Forum readers have responded to your post,
is that they only cry out, when something is happening in Treasure Beach?
Thank you so much for posting the link.

I think the dispute is still so unfamiliar, that perhaps most of us don't know enough to make meaningful comment. Undoubtedly, whenever access to public beaches/parks/traditional meeeting grounds are threatened, the disadvantaged are only further disadvantaged. Is this proposed development being planned by public or private entities.

I had not responded because I was finding it very difficult to access the site for whatever reason. However,I have found another site which gives some information on the issues.
http://jamentrust.org/index.html I wanted to sign the petition but I believe it's now closed. Is there another petition?

Even though Pellew Island is so far from Treasure Beach, it's something we should all care about because it's part of Jamaica and we can't think only about our tiny piece of this nation. We have seen how other parts of Jamaica such as Negril got ruined because everyone wanted to profit and no one seemed to care what was hurt in the process. Pellew Island is an exquisite treasure now threatened by greedy developers. Treasure Beach doesn't seem so far behind to me - a big house here, another one there, building too close to the sea, building on hills and changing how the rains flow down and cause flooding below, not caring about the turtles.

Hi everyone,
The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is working on the Pellew Island issue - it is a tough one, because the island is privately owned. Yes, the on line petition we did last year is closed. But if you watch the YouTube link that is in other posts above, there are email addresses for folks to send in their objections. Diana from JET

we should all be very worried also about the Falmouth Cruise Ship pier .. that will destroy valuable coral reefs etc ..
read attached blog from diana mc cauley.
frightening how jamaica is selling out in every which way. and not to our benefit at all.

Pretty soon there will be no beach for the "likkle" Jamaican to visit.
A couple of years ago I send money to a fund to save Winnifred Beach in Portland from developement, and now they are after Monkey Island !!!
I can imagine (based on recent resort developments) that it will not be long before BIG MONEY developers sink their teeth in TB !!
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

I care 2, even though I understand and agree with what you are saying, the fact is there are very few places in the world that are immune to development of some kind. And those are either National Parks or a poverty stricken region such as Sudan. And TB does not fit in either catagory. The secret to success is PLANNED well thought through sustainable development. And just because someone has lots and lots of money should not give them the right to build what they want where they want. The bottom line is there needs to be more regulations on development, and they need to have the blessings of JET among others.

Thank you Diana for all your never ending help, no matter where in Jamaica, for you and Jet and the other environmental NGO's there are no boundries,
You teach us all, we have to preserve , or at least try ( which is a very difficult and hard job)
I very well remember the time it took all of you NGO's and private individuals in court, a few years ago.

P.S. you can read about that lawsuit on Jet's website
