While in Negril a few years ago we went on a tour on Horseback that took us into the ocean (on horseback)during part of the tour. Does anyone know of a similar type of tour in TB? Or can this be arranged on the day trip to Negril?

I never saw a single horse in Treasure Beach.... but as one who used to ride I think its an awesome Idea! the terrain is ideal, lots of flat dry pathes, etc.

Try http://www.horsebackridingjamaica.com/ for some rides near Montego Bay

also Rhodes Hall Plantation is supposed to have some nice hill and beach riding near Negril

check out chuckka caribbean tours, they also have beach rides near Negril

Just some ideas, I haven't had the pleasure of trying any of them out so I can't say which are the best. I'm sure someone else will give you more 'experienced' advice.

Good idea and enjoy

There were horses across the street from Sunset Resort a few years ago. They looked pretty sickly though. I have pictures of them. The horses in Jamaica are not treated the best from what I have seen. And they break them too early. We have horses, and my sis in law is an equine vet. Most I have seen are treated more like livestock than companions.

Font Hill on the other side of Black River from Treasure Beach has horses and I understand they are in good shape. No beach ride though. I did ride at Chukka Cove on the north coast and it was pretty nice....

The horseback riding at Font Hill is no longer in operation which I am not suprised as one of the horses reared up on Silvan when we all went for a ride. Good think Silvan had all that donkey riding experience and handled it like a real cowboy.

Check out the following link for Treasure Tours recommendation.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your suggestions. My sister is really the one who loves horses, I thought she might like it. Who knows - once we get there (she's never been to JA) she may be content just lazin' around in the sun, with a Red Stripe in hand of course! See you all next week.
Love and Respect, Lisa :-)

Perhaps when you bring your sister back to JA on another trip you can look into Braco Great House Stables on the North Coast <http://www.bracostables.com>.

They are in Trelawny, approx. 32 miles east from Montego Bay and approx. 25 miles west from Ocho Rios. It's a great place and the horses are really well cared for.

Hi everybody, please, if you are considering horseback riding, please do not do it on beaches or in the sea, unless the horses are wearing "diapers." We have film of horseback riding tours with the horses defecating in the sea, and this is very harmful to the marine environment, not to mention public health. Some of you may be familiar, for instance, with the horses who take tourists around Central Park in New York, and they have to wear a bag to catch their waste, so it does not foul New York streets. Of course this would not work if the horses are swimming. Treasure Beach should be careful about beach or swim tours on horses.

Wow Diana, I had no idea? Thanks for that information! I certainly do not want to contribute to something that may damage Jamaica's beautiful marine environment.

Hi Diana - can you please send me the name of the film. I know the owners of Braco Stables well, they own other property including a guests house on the North Coast and have been here for generations. I would like to pass it along to them.

Many Thanks,

"Horses defecating in the sea is harmful to the Marine environment". Never heard of that before. Isn't "Horse defecation" just broken down grass.

No, it's not OK.

Dear It's OK, manure is in a sense broken down grass, but it acts like a fertilizer for plants in the sea, just like it does on land. So it causes various kinds of alage to grow, and if there is a coral reef nearby, the plants grow all over the reef. Nor would you want to swim in horse (or any other kind) manure, would you? Nutrient pollution (nitrates and phosphates) from all kinds of waste, both animal and human, is one of the most serious impacts on our inshore marine environment, and our rivers, for that matter. There were horses in treasure beach. Terry, who lived behind Miss Ruby had two, Black Beauty and Princess. I rode princess alot until she became lame. One night she was thirsty and made her way to Miss Rubies causing a ruckus with the water barrel. So I had to rush her away, of course I gave her a bucket of water first.

Terry planned to rent the horses, however him not being a horse person couldn't manage and the owner took them back.

Southfield also had riding but during a dry spell they died.

Finally, there were two beautiful Palaminoes that grazed in the open field beside Miss Ruby and along the road by the big turn.

Well, there was also a Mule grazing by the bakers who loved treats.
