Thursday evening at Sandy Bank School, while I was attending a meeting of the Treasure Beach Community Action Committee, somebody stole the tire pump off my bicycle that was chained to the flagpole. That tire pump has been on my bike, parked daily at Kingfisher Plaza, and has been used by bike-riding young people and adults and even by people with motorcycles. It is known that if someone needs it they are welcome to use it; it is not necessary to ask. It always gets properly replaced.

Just the week before the theft, I was at a meeting at the school for a presentation of the design for the Treasure Beach Sports Park. As I was locking my bike to the same flagpole, one of the fathers watching some boys practicing cricket commented that he would be offended if I locked the bike because the community was safe and to lock the bike would show disrespect towards the community. At that time I agreed with him – but locked the bike just because it is not mine. I still feel that the community is safe, I have major respect for the man that has so much pride in his community and trust in his neighbors – but I lock my bike now.

If you were hungry and needed to steal my food, I would have respect. Nobody needs to steal a bicycle pump! If you need to pump up your tire, I would lend you the pump, help you with the tire if necessary, and enjoy watching you ride off. I just cannot understand what would cause someone to steal somebody’s pump. You do not have to respect me for what I am doing in your community, you do not have to respect me for the many years that I have lived and the many things that I have been privileged to learn, but you should never show disrespect to your community and your parents by being a petty thief.

I am asking you to bring back the pump. I am not asking because I cannot afford to replace it, but because it is the respectful thing to do. You can drop it at the Breds Source and leave if you wish; or you can stop in and we can visit. I am not angry; I do not wish to punish anyone. I would be pleased to share a few interesting stories and share with you some things that took me a very long time to learn.

I'm so impressed with this post that I read it twice. What a heart of gold this man seems to have; truly the kind of person I'd like to be. If the culprit could read this, he/she must surely be moved to return the pump. Good luck Dennis.

If this is the same "Dennis" that operates the "Shallow Bar'" boat, then yes he is a good and kind man !!!
But I doubt a "Thief" would have the same kind of heart and return the pump !
ONE LOVE !!
Mike
