WESTERN BUREAU:

A town versus country football match, an 'earthday bashment' and a boat trip to the famous Pelican Bar were combined into three days of activities as Treasure Beach's boy wonder, Jason Henzell, celebrated 40 years of life in fine style.

The weekend of May 29-31 was the second time during the month that St Elizabeth's quiet paradise became the hub of excitement as Jamaicans journeyed from across the island to pay tribute to Henzell, whose family is responsible for placing Treasure Beach on the world map.

The three-day event started on Friday night with an intimate dinner at the Henzell's home in Round Hill, St Elizabeth.

On Saturday afternoon, a Kingston team of footballers, captained by Abe Barakat and the 'countrymen' led by James Sampson, competed in a well-attended match at Treasure Beach Sports Park.

Of course, the country 'bumkins' sent the Kingstonians packing after a 2-1 victory, with Henzell scoring the first goal 20 minutes into the game.

A barbecue and music blaring from a sound system were the main events of this fund-raising venture, with proceeds from the bar going towards the Treasure Beach Foundation, which Henzell started in 1998.

On Saturday, some 300 guests turned up at the Calabash Bay Villa for a big earthday bash, organised by Henzell's sister, Justine, his wife, Laura, and friends Samantha Gore and Adina Parchment.

After two nights of celebration, on Sunday afternoon the attention turned to the famous Pelican Bar, off the Parotee peninsula, near Black River, for the culmination of the 40th birthday festivities.

How did a birthday party get to be big news for a national newspaper? It's not like I have bigger news. I am only posing the question.

The local papers often print "human interest" stories about the island's prominent business people.

Happy Birthday, Jason.
