At the JET meeting yesterday there was some brainstorming about what the community needed and one things we came up with is a market. We would love to hear any input about it. The vision is for a small LOCAL market once a month or once a week. Does anyone out there know why the market at Calabash Bay and Great Bay ended? Do you think it is a good idea? Please post comments here. Thanks
I think it is a wonderful idea. Bring the community together, encourage people to revive som of the old time baking and crafts, provide an outlet for local produce, circulate some dollars in the district, provide a positive venue to come together, and visiters would also enjoy the vibe and shopping experience.
Don't see ANY negatives...
Modern days, modern inventions, more taxis and personal vehicles might be some of the reasons why the market has been discontinued.Think about it...with the invention of the computer, people are now working, shopping and trading from their homes. Also, food vans are now driving around and selling from door to door.It would really be nice to see the market being brought back but .....
Market days were my favourite and so many of us "oldtimers" would love to see them revived, speaking specifically of Calabash Bay. It was a part of "dem good ole days". Cant come too soon but of course with much discussion by all concerned.
I always wondered why there was not a market in TB. I wondered why locals travel to Black River for produce, are why they had to buy them from the truck (boot) of a car.
Sounds like a good idea to me !
ONE LOVE !!

Great idea!
Wonderful idea-every week on Thursdays or Fridays, that the locals and restaurants can buy for the weekend, and art and craft for Tourists, hope we will get it
I miss Ms Matil and her red in the middle cake.
Ms Zenie with her donkey and cornsham.
The old market at Calabash Bay was great.
Let's try to bring some tradition back to Treasure Beach.
I'll have things for the market and will be a regular customer for organic veg, nuts, fruits, art, carvings and the magic meetings and talks that happen at a market.
I think this is a wonderful idea. On my 1st visit to T.B. in 2005 I expected to find a local market once a week or so. I've since learned to find sources for fish, produce, etc., but they always involve going somewhere else. It would be lovely to be able to walk somewhere in the community and spend your money here. I think that even the folks who bring around the veggies in their car or van could benefit, as they could easily become market vendors on market day.
I really wish the market would come back to calabash Bay. I fondly remember going to the market with my grandmother and those days we would walk. I have been living in the states now for the past twenty years. The first time I came back to TB it was the strangest thing- no market. There are just some things that should be kept in TB. Lets all vote for this one.
I think, if properly, organised, the market would do very well at the site of the proposed Sports Park. This could give vitality to this location and contribute to making it really meaningful to the community.
Calabash Bay has become quite eroded and is no longer as friendly to the kind of crowded scene that the traditional market day used to be.
Are there old/traditional market grounds and are they still available for this?
What I like about the market idea which was one of results of the JET workshop on Saturday is that it is a proactive project, as opposed to the reactive ones, which of course are necessary.
Two venues were suggested, one at the Calabash corner/intersection (where the road goes down to the beach, the other at the Sports Complex under the trees (if they survive the development). I suppose, both venues can work. I would start at the Calabash venue, which is central, more accessible, is ready and has space in two directions along the road. If it gets too big it can always be moved to the Sports Complex, once it becomes ready, or elsewhere.
