I have read the cottages at Calabash House share a kitchen/common area. My husband and I are thinking of staying there next year - just wondering what others have to say about the place. We walked by last February and it looked nice (we stayed at Jakes). Want to stay somewher where we can still walk to everything, but would like kitchen facilities to either cook ourselves or have someone cook for us. Also wondering about security in the various places. We have stayed at Jakes several times and are thinking of trying someplace else for a change. Any insight is appreciated.

Have stayed at Calabash House and really enjoyed it with the best swimming beach at your toes. Things to consider are: The communal kitchen in the yard has a dirt floor with a concrete pad to stand on, very hard to keep clean. However every morning the caretaker rakes it up. It only has a roof over head so you are pretty much in the element. There is very little in the way of cooking pans, plates, etc...personally I found it difficult to cook a meal but adequate for snacks, coffee, etc. The communal shower is pretty open as well. Nice foliage but just a curtain to pull closed and it is adjacent to the owners cottage and patio. Also, Calabash House is a lively property - very friendly. There are wonderful lounge chairs in the yard and hammocks at seaside.
I do recommend Calabash House and find it delightful. You can have your meals prepared at additional cost in the main house - so if the yard kitchen isn't doable for you, there is always that option. It's central location makes it walkable to Culloden Cafe Tea Garden, Delvins, Jakes Sprats, Jakes...and Scoop-a-licious.

Sunset Resort is VERY safe and has two different room with kitchen facilities. I stay there often. One is the Hibiscus which is a house separate from everyone else and the other is Sunset 1 which has a view of the sea..But it does share (unless you rent the whole thing) two other rooms but the kitchen is not a shared area...If you have stayed at Jakes I would suggest the Hibiscus.
