This is the title of a movie I was fortunate enough to see at a meeting held by the Pedro Bank Management Project at The BREDS office on May 25. The meeting was well attended by several fishermen from the area.

A very good and lively discussion was held. Identifying many of the abuses in the fishing practices and how we can stop them was the main topic of conversation. I was very encouraged to see so many fishermen in agreement, first of the problems, and then knowing something needs to be done. They discussed several solutions and many good suggestions were made.

But as I am no fisherwoman (happy to see one present at the meeting!) I will not go into details but will give you the following link to the Pedro Bank Management Project website and you can see for yourself what is being done and all that still needs to be done.

If you look at nothing else on the site, please make sure to watch the video. There is a link located a bit down and on the right hand side of the main page entitled "Watch Exchange Video". This is an extremely informative video documenting the information exchanges taking place between fishermen in Belize and Jamaica. You will also see some familiar Treasure Beach faces. [Here's a direct link to the video -TBNet]

We are currently trying to obtain a copy of the follow-up video entitled "Massa God Fish Can Done" and will post it as soon as we receive it. This, to me, was an even more shocking video portraying the current conditions at the Pedro Cays.

Meeting held on May 25.

This is a wonderful hand painted banner created by Fiona Godfrey and is currently hanging in the BREDS office at Kingfisher Plaza.

Once again, I left this meeting feeling very optimistic that the fishermen absolutely realize the problems and are uniting to create the changes which have to be made in order for the fishing industry to survive. We've got a long road to travel, but the journey has started!

About what time will this film be shown and roughly what is the length of the fim? I am asking for people who cannot attend for the full day.

JET is still working on the final agenda for their June 13 program, but the film 'Massa God Fish Can Done' is currently scheduled to be shown during the morning segment between 10 and 11 am. Hope this helps.

A strong, sustainable fishing industry is necessary to keep the balance between an independent local community and the tourist industry. This is the heart of community tourism which makes TB so great.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that we recently completed a film documentary entitled Massa God Fish Can Done co-produced by The Nature Conservancy and Vagabond Media, a Jamaican film company.

Massa God Fish Can Done is a fifteen minute documentary focused on the current crisis facing Jamaica’s fisheries and other marine resources. It highlights the problems and potential solutions and serves as a call to arms for everyone to play their part in making a change. The focus is on Jamaica, but the film also talks about Belize and I believe speaks to the issues being faced throughout the Caribbean region. We deliberately chose to have most of the story told by fishers in order to make it more compelling and ‘real’.

Massa God Fish Can Done will be featured live on Jamaica’s radio station Irie FM’s (107.5 to 7) The Cutting Edge tonight, Wednesday June 10, 2009 at 10pm Jamaica time, 11pm EST, followed by an interview with 2 of the Jamaican fishermen featured in the film. You should also be able to access this on the internet at

http://www.iriefm.net/cuttingedge/

We are in the process of posting the film to the Internet as well as making DVDs for distribution.

What ever happened about the scare a few months back with regards to that Japanese fish eating all the other fish?
