I am thinking of returning to TB in late July or early August and would love to hear from other travelers (and locals too) about this time of the year. Weather conditions in particular or just a general report about summer visit to TB would be great.
LOVE AND RESPECT,
Lisa
Two of my trips to TB have been in summer (one in July, one in August). Both have been lovely (how could a trip to TB be anything but lovely, right?).
For the July trip, I arrived right after two small hurricanes had hit. The sea was high and a bit rough when I first arrived, so I didn't swim until the end of the trip. It was pretty hot ... but of course it was hot, and I love the heat in JA, so that was no problem. Lot of mosquitos, so be prepared.
For the August trip, it was also really mosquito-y. The trip was one of my best, weather-wise. Beautiful sunny days, with a couple of rainy afternoons or evenings, calm sea and lots of beach (the sea was so high for that July trip, all the beaches had shrunk). Everything was perfect ... right up until then end when Hurricane Dean hit.
I would go back in July or August without a moment's hesitation (I'd go back any time at all, am totally jones-ing for TB, since it's been more than a year since my last visit!). Yes, there can be storms, but everyone in town knows what to do when there are hurricanes. Most visitors leave before the storms hit. I didn't, but I was incredibly well taken care of by the guest house staff.
I hope you make your trip, Lisa. You've definitely caught the bug!
Well, missing TB - THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is exactly what I was thinking it would be like! I am up for the experience! Not being able to spend time on the beach is not a major concern - there is so much to do besides sunning! So many ways to get some sun! I am planning my trip now and will pack some good bug repellent! I have been to JA in May (not to TB but to Negril) several times and experience the same type of weather and mosquito population (never a hurricane though). The daily afternoon shower is welcome and refreshing and if the rain goes on for hours we get to see all the land creatures that are usually hiding, FUN!
LOVE AND RESPECT - Lisa
yes, its hot - after all it is summer in jamaica, ahhhh but the breeze is always blowing
yes, the sea can be big if there is a tropical depression or storm brewing - i still go in the sea most days
yes, bring insect repellent - also check if your accomodations have screens on the windows or at least a net over the bed
everything will be beautiful and green

I have been to Jamaica almost every month in the year. TB of course is a bit drier but it is hurricane season and hopefully nothing will develop. I wouldn't worry about it. My experience is it can be hot and humid (with a tropical rain now and again) but my philosophy is that it's better than the weather here ; )
Am thinking of coming in August again unless work gets in my way, maybe I'll see ya
Look forward to it Kathy
July and August are maybe 5 degrees hotter than winter. The Caribbean is a travel bargain in the summer. Places used to be empty. Now smart travellers have learned how nice it is in the islands. You will find more children because that's when they're out of school, so summer becomes perfect for family vacations. The mosquitos tend to come out several weeks after a rain, no matter what season. I've been eaten alive in February and gotten no bites in August. I carry bug spray all the time just in case. It depends on the rain. Never heard of a hurricane hitting TB before August 20th. Anything earlier was a tropical depression or a hurricane elsewhere that might have caused rain over Jamaica. In terms of hurricanes, you always have several days warning and then it's up to you to stay or leave.
Yes it hotter, but the trade winds still blow just as nice.
I've found July and August to be hotter. Susie's estimate of five degrees is about right, but five degrees is a lot when it was already hot to begin with. But as I said, I love the heat in Jamaica, so a little more never felt like a bad thing.
Don't worry, Lisa. It doesn't matter when you go to TB. It is always the most beautiful place to be, the most wonderful people and such a breath of fresh air no matter where you're coming from. I wish I was going to be there this July right along with you!
Hey Eric, Not too hot for that bar crawl is it?
I have been to Jamaica almost every mouth. The summer will be hot.
I hope to go the end of July to early August. Hopefully hurricane season will be quiet.
Success! I can almost smell the ocean air! My countdown starts now - I am booked and ready to experience TB in the Summer! See ya all soon!
