My husband and I have been together for over 20 years, and since TB is our favorite travel destination, we're thinking there's no better place to renew our marriage vows. While we'd like to keep it simple, are there any Jamaican customs regarding this that we could incorporate to make it extra special? Thanks for any ideas. Thanks also for your website, it makes me feel connected somehow, and I check it frequently, especially in the bleak winter months! :-)

If you are wanting to record the event, a good photographer/videographer is Tornado Gooden of Global Camera Technology.

We used him and his crew for our wedding a few yrs ago in TB.

Enjoy!

Not sure if you'll be in need of a marriage officer to officiate at the renewal, but if so then you can contact Pastor Campbell at 860-0286.

Thank you for your replies. I don't know how formal we want to be, but I would like to incorporate something uniquely Treasure Beach. I've looked up some information on Jamaican wedding customs, and there are some, including "Curried Goat" (Really?) and "Criticism of the Bride" (Yikes! Really??). I realize these are modern times, but Treasure Beach just doesn't seem like anywhere else in the world. Have any of the old folk customs survived, or should we just toast each other with a Red Stripe, as my husband suggests? (He's a true romantic).

I think Criticism of the Husband could follow the Red Stripe toast. Just kidding.

There is a custom where some people in Jamaica jump over a broom handle. I am serious about this one.

You could make what you do totally informal. For instance, you could write your own vows and get into a boat with the minister and have the ceremony performed out at Floyds Pelican Bar.

Now I am really laughing, because Criticism of Both of Us would logically follow our attempt to jump over the broom handle.

Also, I don't know why I didn't think of Floyd's myself! I guess I just thought we'd be on the beach at sunset, you know the old cliche....

I just found out about a dark cake soaked in rum for a whole year. Not sure what that would taste like, but is it something people still do? Would a piece of pound cake with a splash of Appleton count? (To go with the Red Stripe, of course.)

Jamaican fruit cake (NOT like the gross American fruit cake) is used for weddings. The fruits are ground up and blended into the cake batter, giving the cake the very dark color. It's heavily moistened with fortified red wine for about six weeks. The frosting is typically white. If someone knew you were coming in advance, they could make you some. It's delicious.
