It's that time of year again when my thoughts reluctantly stray towards the upcoming hurricane season and the unfinished canal. I have been rethinking the pros and cons of the canal, and find myself doubting whether it's after all a good thing. I am particularly concerned about runoff from Great Pond into the Sea, and am fearful for the reefs and the consequences of any ecological imbalance. Those of us who religiously spent our sunday mornings swimming around those reefs will no doubt realize how much a part of our DNA they are, and how important they truly are to us.

Does anyone think it would be more prudent (and more economical) to dig Great Pond to a much deeper depth to hold the flood water; inter-connect culverts and mini-canals between the smaller ponds; channel excess water into a deeper Great Pond; and mandate that land owners cease dumping and filling the ponds?

Do we still have time, and does the Government have the will and the means to finally do the right thing for our community?

Perhaps then, there will come a time when this discusssion will gladly be ancient history. Just a thought.

Dear all,we just wrote to NWA and asking how long we have to wait that this canal will be finished Answer:we do not know !!!
We are sitting now nearly 3 years in that minefield-it looks ugly, and the worst thing is,Great Bay will be still under water!!!Can you believe, what happens when we put all that mud(from the unfinished canal)in the sea.Do you know, how Calabash Bay will look after tons of mud?The reef will be damaged,Calabash Bay will be damaged ,the brown brine will spoil -like an oilspil-our beloved Beaches. How long we have to wait?Did you all see the pile of dirt -this dirt has to be removed directly!!!

MAY BE ALL THE CITIZENS OF TREASURE BEACH SHOULD GATHER AROUND AND TRY TO REMOVE THE DIRT.
IF THEY ARE WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT THEN THAT TIME WILL NEVER COME.
WE ALL KNOW HOW SLOW THEY ARE IN GETTING THINGS DONE.

MAYBE IF SOMEONE COULD DONATE A DUMP TRUCK AND THE CITIZENS DO ALL THE HARD WORK.

JUST A THOUGHT....BUT A GOOD ONE.

Even though Diana McCaulay of JET is away until the end of this month, she seems to know the right people at NWA and might be able to get us an answer. Meaning: Are they ever going to finish the mess they started?

She also might be able to look at the canal, perhaps with a GOOD engineer, and determine what the best solution is. Many have been offered in the forum in the past, but who knows which the best is - or even if the best has been suggested. If we choose to do something different than wait for the NWA - whose solution may not work even when done - we should be doing something we KNOW will work AND will not be an eyesore.
