I enjoy reading his article, this week feature Treasure Beach
http://www.jamaicagleaner.com/gleaner/20090326/news/news1.html
I didn't enjoy anything about this article. Instead, I was completely offended by it. The 'treasure' Lala wanted to find seems to have been the "fine-looking woman with chocolate brown skin ... a flawless face and intriguing brown eyes" that he saw when he walked into Sister Q's. TB's only treasure is in the observer's chances to 'hook up' with someone?
This man was clearly cranky because he wasn't able to hit on the bartender at Sister Q's, but that's no reason to vent his spleen on TB. Men chasing women on the beach? When has that ever happened? Was he even in TB or did he drive too far and wind up in Negril? A "somewhat scary looking fellow" on the beach? That would be one of our fishermen, yes? What's he talking about? Nothing scary about our fishermen. Men 'loitering' around a fishing boat? What is this picture Lala is painting of TB?
I'm surprised this was published. What is the point of publishing articles that run down a community? Anyone reading the Gleaner online and thinking of traveling to JA would certainly give TB a pass based on this writer's assessment.
Totally agree with you Tone. The whole article irritated and annoyed me. I am trying to think of any incidences where I have heard guys 'joke' with another, and then he walks off to go sulk!
Not up to the usual Lala standard. Highly self-indulgent and clearly not respectful of the people or the place.
The fine "chocolate brown" woman, as far as I know, is not a commodity.
People should be respected, whoever they are; wherever they are. This time they were dissed.
I didn't notice a place on the Gleaner page that gave the option to respond to the article. If I am wrong, could someone point that out? I would like to respond to Lala directly.
Lala must be going through male menopause. That article was very blah. and a waste of paper ..
Poor Lala.
Him miss di Treasure!
....but there is not even a morale to the story, what is he trying to get at. I finished reading it and was still browsing trying to find the end of his story.
Does this man get paid to write?
Lala missed ALL the treasures in Treasure Beach .. maybe thats a good thing though, as now it won't be over-run with the wrong kinds of people.
Good thing he didn't find the Treasure; it still belongs to us.
I always enjoyed his stories.
However i think he did not get anything to write about since the person he was trying to ask questions was beeen interupted by the customer in the bar. As customary in all his other stories when he visits communties he always ask a resident questions. In this acse he did not get his questions out
He could have ask some one else the questions. Secondly when he hand in the story the editor should not have allowed it to print.
None the less i will still read his articles, cuz for the most part they are always fun and enlightening.
I also read his articles every Thursday in the Gleaner, and for the most part they are entertaining, and reveals a slice of Jamaican culture.
However, he REALLY missed the target on this one, and of all the different charaters he could have talked to in TB to make it a good article. I think he was just lazy on this one.
ONE LOVE !!
Mike
Mikey Mike, I think Lalah lost focus on the bartender, and he was upset with the fact that he never got to ask his questions, yes his article are very interesting and he usually does a very good job, but he lost focus, simple.
I wonder who or what this article is supposed to represent, Lalah used journalism as a guise to mock the people he met and the community of TB. I dont know what the purpose of this article was, I can't believe a national newspaper published it. A child could have given a better account, wonder why he wasn't getting anywhere with the bartender, attitude perhaps!
It would be good to direct comments on this article directly to The Gleaner:

I guess for the most part we all agree he lost focus on this article about TB. However its obvious from a few of the post that everyone is mentioning the "bartender" so either you all have inside knowledge of what really went down or something, so anyone care to give a true account of why she never gave him the time of day, or how was his attitude.
Its always good for citizens to represent their communities to the highest level in any circumstances, u never know who is who and where your interaction will end up. The world is Global village.Even if his attitide was bad, she could have still represented herself and community and answered the questions with class and grace, basically act like the bigger person. Maybe he would not have a story at all to even submit to his editor. Just so you know i have seen women shut down guys with dirty attitude with class and eloquence, you would think its a beautiful work of art.
So of course Lalah did a poor job but if what i am reading here is that the bartender did not answer his questions because he was hittin' on her or he had an attitude, she too did a poor job of representation.
No, Robert. I see nothing to suggest that the bartender was at fault in any way. Apparently Lala's own traveling companion kept getting in the way of a conversation with the bartender. What comes out in the article is Lala's annoyance that he did not get a chance to "chat up" the lady. Not her fault; if you ask me!
