So many people seemed to be concerned about the noise of the plane and what effect it will have on tourism. What about the blasting stereos coming from every direction of private homes and bars as soon as the sun rises and way past mid night sometimes. It's the reason why I choose to go somewhere quiet for my vacation this year and not to go home like I use to. I say if you are keeping an occassional party, dance, session what ever you call it then it's ok, but if you are playing music for your own home enjoyment or the enjoyment of customers in your bar keep the noise within the confinement of your walls.

There is a Noise Abatement Act but it is enforced unevenly. Everyone here can point to places playing loud musice that are closed down by the police at a certain hour while others making the same amount of noise are allowed to continue to play their music. The laws should be enforced no matter who owns the establishment. Fair is fair. Law is Law.

What about those cars with there sound system, they are the worse offenders.

And don't forget the obnoxiously loud mufflers which you can hear day and night.

Is there are law against this?

You are right about those horrible sound system cars. They are GROSS. In addition, it is nearly impossible to even understand 90% of what they are saying. One followed me all the way to Southfield and I thought I would have a heart attack or lose my mind.

It is not truly a peaceful vacation when you have to listen to construction (both on and off the property) your whole vacation. We have also been disturbed, mostly in the morning before 6 a.m., by load music, roosters, and dogs barking. Apparently, no one tells their dogs to "shut up" in Jamaica after they have been barking for hours.

o yeah, I forgot to mention the sound sytem cars, they make the windows of your room vibrate, and now adding mufflers all the more reason to make me want to stay away.

DISGUSTING! DISGUSTING! DISTGUSTING!............It's all very disgusting indeed

Auto sound systems and mufflers are my pet peeve too - but I've become immune to it because I have to deal with them here at Hampton Beach all summer long. (plus, living around the corner from a biker bar isn't so pleasant after last call)

I really don't mind loud music coming out of buildings, cars, houses, etc... My problem is when the music is so loud that the panels on the car vibrate, or that there is so much treble my ears feel like they'll bleed. Ridiculously loud and tinny muffler sounds at 6am that you can hear approaching from Billy's bay and doesn't fade away until Calabash bay. That's a real peach.

Well, it isn't enough to deter me from visiting. I'll be back on Monday with bells on. A little music and noisy mufflers aren't enough to keep ME away.

It's funny, when I'm home here in the US these sorts of noises bother the heck out of me.
When I'm there, the roosters, the dogs, the "sound system cars" and the music doesn't bother near as much. I guess I just consider these the sounds of the Jamacia that I love and just part of the culture.
There was only one night in TB last month that the music bothered me until 4 a.m. when I understand the police finally shut it down but it was a night that there was some other personal stuff that was on my mind and I was glad the music finally stopped.
I guess maybe it all depends on the frame of mind.

I dont see anything wrong with "Cars with sound systems", its just a regular thing in Treasure Beach, it has been around for a long, long time and I dont see why all of a sudden its a big deal besides the fact that they are noisey, people use them to play at special occassions like Birthday parties, weddings and so on. So people should leave them alone and let them play there music and sport their loud mufflers because sooner or later you will need them to play somewhere.

Gee Sunshine, you burst my bubble this morning.

I took great pride in considering myself

'tested and adopted'. I guess once a Kingstonian

always one eh.

I will accept a residence visa and promise

to keep the old laws. You don't badda me and I

don't badda you. I will not be too faas in

other people buisiness, unless invited.

I will come to your assistance as your

neighbour. The 10 commandments and the laws of

Jamaica.

Of course there is fine print. I have not

read all of it. Every community is unique and

will evolve community guidelines that benefit

local runnings. The challenge is to be

collectively awake enough to be flexible and

let common sense and conscience rule.

I was guilty of loud muffler as a teen, it was

some sort of mating ritual I guess.

I was born and raised with the nighttime

Boomboomboom of the bass from Four Roads,

Reggae was evolving, the sound of ancient drums

was obvious then.

I've been away from TB for 5+ years (shame) and

hope that, as in Negril, there are some places

that are considered 'Sacred Ground' and are

there for those that love the silence that

nature alone can offer.

Maybe the loud mating rituals of mufflers can

be converted to display alone (bling etc) and

sound systems may revert to the sweeter night

music. Moonlight serenades. I dream on.

A few years ago I was exploring the possibility

of putting my energy into the restoration of an

18th Century great near the seaside.

Guests in an olde time atmosphere, food

furnishings and all. Many have done this

successfully. The first warning sign was the

tearing down of the remnant of their Olde

Wharfe, a wonderfully cool corner with ferns

growing in the stones and history whispering.

The second, the realisation that the two gas

stations up the road were draining their

wastes in the river that flowed besides the

Great House. Swimming in the the river and

eating local river and sea fish was a part of

the experience.

The third was when the local maker of building

blocks expanded his operation, 24/7 with

noisy machines and dust.

The crowning fourth is when the riverside

between said gas station, block yard and the

great house was cleared. Too much bush.

I was an outsider, I came with good

intentions and with backers waiting a report.

I had a great adventure with the old timers,

visit and swim every time I pass. The Olde

Wharfe lies sad and the great house don't

look so great. My report was: NO.

Everybody free to do what they want. Everybody

free to say what they don't want.

Ahhh sunday morning.

To XD Handy XD: How long is a long, long time.Ten years ago you would have to search very hard to find a car in TB with a sound system in it and the few that did respected the rigts of their fellow citizens. All this talk about outsiders need to stop. Because once you have invested in a community you have the same rights as someone from that community to protect that investment.I am pretty sure most of the people posting were born in TB

Really, when and where did you hear gunshots MikeyMike? Surprised that was allowed to post given that it is:
a) not fact that has been proven by TB Net
b) A comment like that is bad for tourism and reputation.
Tisk tisk...

Sorry my post was missed understood.
I was making a "general" comment about "noise" in all of Jamaica, both cities, towns and the countryside.
I have in fact NOT EVER heard any "gun shots" in TB, and hope that I never do !!!
Once again my apology for not being clearer in my message, and for any offense that it caused.

Show me a person who would like one of those sound cars to play at their wedding and I will show you a person who has never heard of a proper sound system that can play music and songs for all the guests to enjoy.

Now, if those cars would invest in proper sound systems and maintain them, perhaps all of what they broadcast could be understandable. Instead, what one hears oftens sounds like "COME DRANEHALLSATBLAH BLAH BLAH BRRWHIZ DANCE JUNCTION SATURDAY BRBRBR HRMHWH DANCE."

As a matter of fact, I have been there during bird season TB Net. Met the guys from Kingston who stayed at TB Hotel last year. I am not sure that was what Mikey Mike was talking about, and I am not sure he has been there during hunting season in May/June. Please read the post again, and tell me what your thoughts would be if you were a tourist who is considering a trip to TB.

What about the posting of the meeting with Jason Henzel about the "sea plan" landing where he mentioned the "discharge of a firearm" by one of the locals to scare off the plane ????
What would your thoughts be if you were a tourist considering using the "sea plane" service to come to TB. And this posting was of Jason Henzel. Of all people he would have thought of the impact of this statement on his future guests that might consider using the new "sea plane" !!
Again my point was a general comment about "noise" in all of Jamaica, not TB in particular !!
I am a true fan of TB and will continue to promote it to any future tourists I come in contact with, as one of the safest, most authentic, and safest places to visit in all of Jamaica !!

I heard gunshots from our yard at Rainbow Tree. They came from the villa next door to us. I got in a vehicle and drove over and went through the villa's gate and up to the front door without asking permission. There were several birders from Kingston there, and when I challenged them one admitted he'd been cleaning his rifle and a shot went off. I told him I heard four shots, so that wan't from cleaning his rifle. I reminded him he was in the middle of a residential area -- that children played right near that villa, and people were on the beach. I then copied his license plate number and threatened to call the police to have him arrested if I ever heard another shot. I called the villa owner who was shocked this was happening on his property.

Whether or not I agree with hunting is not the point. Firing a deadly weapon in a residential community is.

Do you rather to hear to sound of loud mufflers or the sound of gun shots??... these young men love music and load mufflers whether it sounds like old pan or big sound... this is what they enjoy and if we know whats best for our community we should enjoy hearing these noise instead of gun shots... we live in a god bless community and we should appreciate the kind of young people that are among us as they are not doing any wrongs... Dat is wat dem love loud mufflers and not gun...

Loud muffler or gun shat?

Hmmmm, a difficult one TB!

As long as the bullets stay away from people, I can tolerate the blap-blap-blap better than the toxic roars of wasted horsepower.

How about neither?

Now that would be a real blessing.

PS: I did not know that big men still got off their rocks by killing our feathered friends?
Wild hog and spear would be a real challenge. I can arrange this anytime.

Maybe we need to teach our young men the health consequence of being in constant close proximity to loud blasting speakers. It can rapture your tympanic membrane guys. We don't need a future generation of deaf men.

Yes, untouchable and sometime it take years for the side effects of loud music to manifest. Why be so upset about a piece of good advise. Please forgive me, I rather show concern than ignorance.

Why does one have to choose? This is like asking if you want to drink from the bottle of Poison Number One or Posion Number Two. They are BOTH bad. The correct choice is NO NOISE TO BOTHER OTHER PEOPLE. Be a good neighbor. Have consideration for others.

Ooono complain 2 much. Ooono memory 2 short. Young people get blamed for everything. What about the loud music in the home that keep people in other areas, or the man next door, up all night. We have to learn to speak 'nicely and kindly' to the youth. Let's try to save them not destroy them.

I don't see how encouraging our youth to play loud music which is sometimes disrespectful and annoying to others could be a positive thing.

To the youth I say play your music, but with discretion for other's. Tone it down some times. Not everyone enjoy your taste of music and not everyone enjoy very loud music. There is a time and place for everything. Music played everyday in the privacy of your car should be for your own entertainment. When you are playing at an occasional party or dance then that's understandable.

Who remembers when we used to play goat skin drum, rhumba box and guitar (if wi did lucky fi have one).

Gone, as time changes all. Too bad.

When I was in the hills of Ja year before last, the boy dem set up a saturday night sound system say 60 feet away from me (a test?).

By 3:00 am, I had become sound tolerant and able to attain a deepish sleep.

Once is enough.

Respect to the sound system man dem still, I think I see QUALITY around the corner. Money and health usually follow after quality.

And, yes I have lost the high end of my hearing thanks to the loundness of teen music and 20 years of woodworking machinery.
