WOW! The economy has hit Air Jamaica. No more flights out of Los Angeles. I was so bummed to find that my flight had been re booked to another air line today. Will really miss the direct flight to MoBay. Been flying to Jamaica on Air JA for the last six years. Always perfect service, friendly employees, always on time! Never a charge for my baggage, even when it was occasionally overweight due to all the souvenirs I purchased. This new flight has me missing party time in TB (10 hours of it). Only 20 more sleeps (and some extra travel time) til I arrive. Still Excited!
What is happening with Air Jamaica? I heard they may be gone as of the end of March. Not only from Los Angeles but from everwhere. Someone who knows please fill us in. I LOVE Air Jamaica.
Wow, very glad I noticed this thread, for indeed Air Jamaica is making some changes, affecting our flights to Jamaica in about 3 weeks.
I spoke with the AJ sales office in LA, because I was having trouble getting through to AJ on the 800#. The sales office advises tonight is the last AJ flight from LA; they are making changes to schedules in Atlanta and Miami as well (though there was no suggestion those cities were being cut entirely).
Have now reached agents at 800#; they are rebooking our trip on other carriers.
Air Jamaica is attempting to privatize. In case you'd like some details ... http://www.airjamaicatransaction.org/
They just stopped flying out of Miami. That seems crazy to me.
well, they have incredible prices to and from NYC. Hope the changes aren't headed this way... We're already booked for the summer.
They stopped flying out of MIAMI? This makes no sense at all no matter what happens to Air jamaica. Are they folding their tent and going away or what? If ANYONE knows anything please share that information.
Anyone booking with Air J at this time is taking a huge gamble !!!!
I use to fly them all the time from Atlanta, but after Butch Stewart sold his controling shares back to the JA goverment the service declined, and I stopped using them, and will never use them again.
I really do not think that they will survive for much longer. I think it is a huge waste of Jamaicans money for the goverment to keep it flying for the sake of national pride. That money can be put to use for many better things in Jamaica !
ONE LOVE !!
Mike
As a resident of Florida I have to say Air J would not get a lot of business from Miami, reason being Miami is highly over populated with Spaniards.
Many airlines in the US are suffering and have been bleeding money for some time, hence, all the mergers rather than letting them hemorrage to death. Hope Air JA can hang in there until there is some resussitative measure available.
What does a lot of Spaniards living in Miami have to do with Air Jamaica ? Did you know that a lot of Jamaicans live in the city of Miami also? I also think that Air Jamaica flies to some Spanish-speaking countries.
Hey Mandy, I don't think speaking Spanish makes one a Spaniard. Pretty funny idea.
Air Jamaica transported business people and tourists back to forth from Florida to Jamaica on several flights every day. I'm betting they were mainly Americans and Jamaicans.
Miami is a hub that many use when they have to use connecting flights to JA, especially during non busy season, where we here in Minnesota do not have non stop flights except Nov-April
MikeyMike, people booking with Air Jamaica are not taking a huge gamble. Assuming they pay via credit card and their flight doesn't go, they will either be rebooked on another carrier or get a refund. Plain and simple.
AJ is still flying out of Ft. Lauderdale even though they appear to have given up their Miami slots.
I have always adored AJ's service. Their safety record is unmtched.
They are the opposite of a no-frills airline such as RyanAir. If you are following the news today, RyanAir is proposing their passengers pay to use the bathroom on their flights. This was part of their public statement:
"One thing we have looked at in the past, and are looking at again, is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door, so that people might have to actually spend a pound to `spend a penny' in future."
I agree the Government of Jamaica doesn't have the funds to keep subsidizing Air Jamaica, but I sincerely hope they find a buyer or a partner.
I agree with 4AJ! I have been treated with great respect, care and attention to meet my needs as best possible. Air Jamaica has been very hospitable by putting me, a frequent AJ Flyer on a similar timed flight. Considering I purchased a flight from the special "non refundable" flight offered in January they offered to refund my fare if I preferred to do so. I never received bad service from the company and hope that they return to Los Angeles!
Love my Air Jamaica, very sad they are not flying out of Miami anymore. Flew with them for 17 years, never had a problem, just good Jamaican hospitality. Will continue fly with them out of Ft. Lauderdale
MikeyMike, Butch Stewart was bleeding Air Jamaica dry...he was selling package holidays on Air J which only benefits his Sandals outfit, all Sandals managers fly first class for free on weekends for business (go figure) shipping stuffs for Sandals White House in Westmoreland free again(that's another story) yes it's gone down but it's because of B Stewart and now the credit crunch. Nine out of ten items in Sandals White House are imported. Air Jamaica have been mismanaged for years.
Hope Air Jamaica continue flying.
From Mr. Bruce Nobles, President and CEO of Air Jamaica:
"Our new schedule offers 218 flights each week to 13 destinations focusing on our core routes as we direct our efforts to provide you with the best service to your favourite destinations – going where you go. We made a decision for example, to discontinue service to Miami airport and instead offer 4 daily flights between Jamaica and Fort Lauderdale. This is in response to the increased traffic from our Fort Lauderdale gateway as our passengers continue to move northwards in Florida and also to take advantage of the cheaper airport costs in Fort Lauderdale."
Routes Air Jamaica WILL be flying:
* Four flights daily to and from Ft. Lauderdale
* Three flights daily to and from New York
* Six flights weekly to and from Philadelphia
* Five flights weekly to and from Baltimore, Chicago, Orlando, and Toronto
Just to add, I once had to return to the US as an injured passenger, requiring 6 seats to be folded to accommodate the stretcher on which I had to lay. Should have paid for the 6 seats, Air Jamaica only charge me for 1 seat. AJ is the best Airline in the world.
Sadly the Boston route was canceled several years ago..Too much money now to fly to TB..sad...miss the place very much
I just heard yesterday that US Air is now flying direct from Boston to Mobay.
WOW, I wish they flew direct from Los Angeles! Everybody pray for sunny weather in North Carolina. This stop is already making me wait an extra 3 hours to get to beautiful Jamaica! OOOOOO only 16 more sleeps and a longgggg commute on two planes til I get to PARADISE!!!
