Sounds like a cozy cabin. I would like one myself, but like surprise said, it's not practical. Only a pity.

I don't get why you would think it's a joke!! There are many board houses that have lasted for decades and even longer all over Jamaica. There are two sweet ones at Calabash House and they have been through 3 hurricanes as far as I know. There is someone in Westmoreland that makes them. The person who own Calabash House would know who he is. Good luck and I think it's a great idea.

Wooden board houses are inappropriate not only for a hurricane zone but also for places where termites thrive. Definitely less expensive than block reinforced with steel but couldn't be considered permanent. The Food for the Poor homes in Treasure Beach are wood. Many of those that made it through Ivan and Dean were specially reinforced and had hurricane straps added by their owners and several were protected by the mountains.

I have had 2 board houses in TB, at Calabash House, for about 3 or 4 years. The man from Little London, Westmorland, who sells the prefab wood houses had his people come down & build them for me, as my design was too tall to send on a truck. His name is currently not on my lips, English is his pet name, & Mr. Brown, who came down to build the houses could not have been pleasanter or faster.
Hard to know rates with the current exchange fluctuations, but I think they sell houses from about $2000US up, depending on the design.
Knocking wood, they have done very well so far in the weather.
You need to have the foundation done yourself.
Hope this helps, you can email me directly @ ees01@earthlink.net if you need any more info that I might be able to provide. Assuming CWJ gets my email working soon.

Elizabeth's two cottages at Calabash House do have bathrooms with sink and toilets. I've stayed in them many times and they're great. There's an outdoor shower to boot.

She told me that since she's so close to the sea she made them higher that usual & used extra steel in the construction and its full of hurricane strapping that she had specially made & carried from the States.

Hope this helps.
