Hello! I am visiting in March with a couple of friends and I would like to know what type of school supplies we can bring to donate to the local elementary schools. I see the "What's needed" section on the Community Groups listing but would like to see what is MOST desired...

How nice of you!!

Please bring books and give them to Miss Zane. These can be reference books and/or reading books for the students. You may also bring some reference books for the teachers. Books do not have to be new, but they should be in good condition.

Treasure Beach Foundation is asking for books for the local schools. Perhaps you could ask them for specifics. They are at TreasureBeachFound@earthlink.net.

Thank You! I will check with the foundation! Karen, what type of reading books would be best for Miss Zane?

Reading books should be appropriate for children aged 6 to 12, as Sandy Bank Primary includes grades one though six. The younger students both read books on their own and also appreciate having stories read to them. Those in upper grades read on their own. For the upper grades, I would especially recommend biographies and novels with an inspiring content, perhaps talking about how someone overcame a problem. These students are also very interested in other countries and would appreciate books talking and showing about how people live elsewhere. They also can use recent reference books on almost any subject, but stay away from history books on countries other than Jamaica. Workbooks for either advanced students or those who need some extra attention are always welcome.

Please remember the teachers will also appreciate reference books.

If you have books for even younger children, please feel free to donate them to Sandy Bank Basic School, almost directly across the street from the Primary School. The Basic School is a pre-school with students ranging from 2-1/2 to 5. Children learn to read, write, and do basic math there.

Fantastic! I will be filling my second suitcase to the brim. Wish I could bring more but will do my best to fill the 50lbs. suitcase with a variety of items for the schools.

Will customs have a problem with my donation?

Karen, I think you and I are conversing thru email AND the forum, HU? No problem! Thanks for all your information.

Just think, if every visitor brought a few new reading books for the local schools????

The school can also use maps to display in the classrooms.

Another nice touch would be to bring some recent news magazines on the Obama inauguration.

Wow, it is hard to choose what to bring! I was thinking about the inauguration info - I will do that! Maps, great! (WORLD MAPS?) You are right, books are heavy. I am looking for things that are light but worthy. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions - they are helpful :-)

All types of maps would be appropriate -- world maps, maps of different continents, and even maps of some countries or areas which are in the news (e.g., China or the Middle East). Don't think of only "political area" maps which show outlines of countries and their major cities. Also consider maps which provide other useful information such as topography -- or maps which provide scientific info such as amount of rainfall or population numbers. If you are bringing a big flat map, get a cardboard mailing tube and roll the map inside it before packing to assure it won't get mangled.

Yes, books are heavy, but they can be distributed among your pieces of luggage, including carry-ons. You can also ask anyone accompanying you to put a few into their pieces of luggage.

This is very helpful information. How long is the book drive going on?

Cool! I've started a book drive!

Well, it's not really a "timed" book drive. Books will always be needed by the schools. Students never outgrow their need to read. Thanks to you, Lisa, the call for books is once again on this site.

quote: "...but stay away from history books on countries other than Jamaica."

why is that I ask..?? arenīt they supposed to learn about history elsewhere ..??

The students are definitely supposed to learn about history in places other than Jamaica. But they do not need an overabundance of detailed history textbooks on other countries. History books on other countries would be more likely to be used if they were written in an interesting manner and covered a specific subject such as the impact of the Cultural Revolution in China.

Thanks for clarifying. I was going to bring a bunch of history textbooks even my own children found totally uninteresting. When I looked through them I understood why. They are boring, boring, boring. The kids at Sandy Bank do not need boring books.

Sandy Bank also needs reference books on science including biology, astronomy, and geology.

They are also very much in need of educational software that will run on Windows. The most useful would be those teaching reading via interactive DVDs -- meaning sets which could be used by an individual student at her or his own pace.

Does anyone know some good software packages of the type Miss Kennedy mentions? I looked on Amazon and can't seem to find something that sounds good.

Thanks for the Google suggestion. I'm not finding anything with interactive CDS and a DVD there. Could you suggest something specific? Sorry for being annoying when I know you're trying to help.

I and my friends brought books for the primary school last week. You will be surprise at how many books you can fit into that 50lb weight limit on checked luggage. The principal at the school was glad to get them, and there was no problem at Customs. They did not check us, but I heard that book donations are excempt from Custom Duties.
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

I just looked at the website for Treasure Beach Foundation. They discuss the books that are needed for the schools and provide a lot more information on what they have done and how all of us can help. I think this site is something all of us who love Treasure Beach should take the time to read. I for one had no idea how much these people do for the community.
