The Coast Guard and Marine Police are continuing their search for six fishermen from St. Elizabeth who have been reported missing since last Friday.

Three of the six missing men have been identified as Wayne Dowdie, 40, Kirk Lindo and a man known only as "Sugar Bump", while the identity of the other three, including the Honduran captain is still unknown.

The fishermen left the Black River Wharf on Thursday, January 15 on board the fishing vessel, ‘Cross Tide' for a two week fishing expedition in Honduran waters.

The men were last contacted sometime after 6 o'clock Friday January 16, when the owner of the vessel, Victor Vassell, called the boat.

Gloria Dowdie, Wayne Dowdie's mother told RJR News that she and others became concerned when the men failed to make contact with them on Saturday as planned.

It has also been reported that other fishing vessels have gone into the waters where the ‘Cross Tide' was supposed to be anchored for fishing, but neither the boat nor the men were seen.

Mrs. Dowdie said they made at report at Coast Guard and the Marine Police post at the Black River Wharf.

Outside assistance has also been sought to help in the search for the six missing fishermen and the boat.

Found this information on the Jamaica Observer Website.
Sunday, January 25, 2009

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth - Relatives, friends and the employer of six fishermen who disappeared while on a trip to the western Caribbean last weekend are expecting the worst following news that articles believed to have come from the missing boat have been found floating in Honduran waters.

Victor Vassell, the owner of the missing fishing boat, Cross Tide, told the Sunday Observer late yesterday that he had earlier received news that a "white igloo" packed with meat, seasoning and Red Stripe Beer was found by a Honduran fishing boat five days ago.

Vassell said there were also reports that another Honduran vessel reported finding life vests and rubbery "life rings" (worn around the waist) floating in the water.

The boat owner said the description of the cooler and its contents as well as the life-saving devices fitted that of articles which were on the boat when it left Black River.
"Everybody was hoping that maybe they (fishermen) had gotten into trouble and were drifting, but when we hear this news about the things floating in the water, we have to think that most likely the boat sink," Vassell said.

He said he had reported the latest information to the authorities.

A JDF Coastguard spokesman told the Sunday Observer that a search had so far borne no fruit. "The case is still open and the search is continuing but we have found no trace," he said.

He said checks with neighbouring authorities including the Honduran government had also proved fruitless.
The search was launched after the six - including five Jamaicans and a Honduran - who had left Black River on Thursday, January 15 on a two-week fishing trip, - failed to make contact with the boat owner last weekend as had been arranged.

The six missing fishermen have been named as Wayne Dowdie, 39, Kirk Lindo, 37, Tommy Gordon, 26, Desmond Gordon, 39, Colin Lynch, 35 all of St Elizabeth; and Gilbert Mujim, a Honduran national who was the designated captain of the Cross Tide.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
It's own appointed limits keep;
Oh!, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

MISSING FISHERMEN HELD IN COLOMBIA? - Relatives claim they were captured in foreign country
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coastguard are investigating reports that six fishermen from St Elizabeth who went missing in January are being held against their will in Colombia.

Reports are that the men - Wayne Dowdie, 40, Desmond Gordon, 39, Kirk Lindo, 37, Colin Lynch, 35, Tommy Gordon, 26, and Honduran Gilbert Mugim, 38 - left the Black River Wharf on Thursday, January 15, for what should have been a two-week fishing expedition. They were travelling on board a 40ft fishing vessel with white and blue hull, named 'Cross Tide', and have not been seen since.

Veda Channer, a cousin of two of the fishermen, however, contacted THE STAR last week, claiming that a coastguard in Miami in the United States informed her that the men were being held in Colombia.

"She told me that the call came in over the radio in Miami that the men were having engine problems. She said that Colombia responded to the call," the relative said.

When THE STAR contacted the JDF headquarters, Major Ricardo Blackwood said "the JDF also received that report (the men being in Colombia)". However, up to last week Thursday the Colombian coastguard had not seen them, nor did they release such a report.

no communication

The soldier said contact was last made with the men on January 16 when their vessel arrived at Pedro Cays. Since then, no communication has been established with them. He said that "In order to bring about closure to this aspect of the issue it would be prudent for the family member who gained that information to come to the coastguard base so we may ascertain the specifics of what he/she was told."

A representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that while they, too, have received such information suggesting that the men were maybe in Colombia, the ministry was not yet in a position to make any comments on the situation.

The source, however, said that the reports are being "actively pursued" and information about any further developments would be made available at a later date.

I too hope this is true, and hope, that it is actively being pursued by the ministry of foreign affairs, However Columbia is approx 450 miles from the pedro keys, Does anyone know their intended fishing grounds for that trip?? I had heard Honduras, and thats a completely different angle from Columbia, but it is possible, Please keep us posted.

I Just noticed there is an Island (Bajo Nuevo) approx, 75 to 80 miles South West of the Pedro keys, which would be more in line with Honduras, This island belongs to Columbia,it is definitely possible, Lets hope so, and hope we get them back.
