Not so long ago, many of us who have cavorted, swam and snorkled along the many bays of Treasure Beach found some
enchantment and a submerged wonder in Rebecca's 'short tale'
of being the the pilot for an identifiable school of fish ass-id-u-ously following her every move off these shores.
These "web of life" incidents always satisfy that deep human
yearning for connection and play. Oh, to grab a fin of a dolphin
and have the ride of our lives... not dashed upon the lacerating reefs.
But so often, we are also reminded of our position in the "food chain", and the more prosaic thought that, in all its beauty, Rebecca's fish might have been looking to "clean" her before she
or her stand-ins could "clean" them.
There is a sweet little story in the Washington Post (12/8/2008),
"Amid the Coral, Just Me and My Gill-Friend", by Marsha Schmidt, that continues this thread to the shore (sure?)

Thanks ZED. Marsha's experience is exactly what happened to me right down to hating to leave the little guy in the water when I got out. I will never forget that experience.

Could someone cite a link to Rebecca's original "Fish Story".
It sounds like a "keeper" for the Anthology:
"Bono-Noo Stories from Treasure Beach" which are our very own butterflies.

This is a piece of my original post made on September 23 under the Thread of Frenchmans Beach describing my snorkeling adventure of the day.

When I got back into the sea to start my trek back to Calabash Bay, I was escorted by a 1 inch yellow tailed snapper the entire way to Calabash Bay. This has never happened to me before for such a length of time. I've had small fish swim around me for a bit and then leave. I've even had a remora (SP) try to attach himself to me, but THIS has never happened. I felt like little Nemo was directing me the whole way back home. He just stayed about a foot directly in front of my face the whole distance. Once in a while a strong current would take him away and a few seconds later I would see him swimming up my underside to take his place back in front of me. When I got to Calabash Bay, I showed my new little friend to a young man swimming in the water. As I got out of the water, the little fish started to follow him around! It was just great fun and what an amazing experience.

Bizarre. The same exact thing happened to me down in Billy's Bay about two weeks ago. I couldn't stop laughing at this little guy.

A few years ago Karin and I were in Cape Cod (Massachusetts, USA) on the bay-side walking the beach out of Truro, when we noticed a six-inch fish following us about two feet off the surf. The fish stopped when we stopped and turned when we turned. The fish followed for about 20 minutes. We still think of it as "our fish."
