I WILL BE IN TB IN 4 WEEKS (coming from uk) COULD SOMEBODY TELL ME IS IT BETTER TO BRING US DOLLARS OR JA DOLLARS?
And how would you bring JA Dollars to Jamaica? Where would you get them from?
My experience when traveling anywhere is to buy the local currency there, not before. I personally would suggest bringing US dollars (they are accepted everywhere) and stop at the market in Black River to change to some JA dollars. Don't do it at the airport, you'll get a worse exchange rate. Some hotels in TB also will change US dollars to JA
Diane,it's best to have the currency of the country you are in.Jamaica(jamaican dollar)Even though british pound,US Dollars works. It's your choice(I think)
I would say bring your UK dollars. They are exchanged anywhere US, Canadian or other monies can exchange. I would guess by the time you exchange into the US then bring here and exchange into JA, you would be best just to bring your UK dollars here to exchange directly. Pound sterling is just as easy to exchange here as US, Canadian or Euro.
I will be coming to Jamaica, Treasure Beach in just over a week. From previous trips i have learnt that its best to change a little at a post office, you know enough to tip at the airport and get some food and drink if needed on your journey from the airport. Find out if your post office has jamaican dollars first as sometimes they have to order them which takes a couple of days!!! Then use your cashpoint card to withdraw whatever you need for the rest of your stay, your money is then safe and you automatically get the exchange rate for that day of withdrawal.
You can then withdraw money from Black River on your way down to TB.
Do not exchange currency before you leave the UK or at the airport in MoBay unless you feel you need some J for petrol or for a snack. There are a few good Cambios right in MoBay on the way to TB. They will change your money and give you excellent rates. If you have a good driver he'll know where to stop. King Cambio is really good. SuperPlus in MoBay is another good place to exchange your pounds. Also some of the small groceries in Black River are very fair. Naps is one of them. The banks are not bad but they will not give you the best rates, though they are better than the airport. My experience with the hotels in TB is they will change your money, but their rates are almost as bad as the airport - meaning a ripoff.
Change only as much as you think you'll use or you'll lose money changing J back into pounds. Especially at the airport.
I just hit the ATM at the (Mo Bay) airport when I land. The rates are usually better than you get on the 'street', though if your bank charges any fees it may wipe out any savings.
Have good trip, Diane.
many thanks for all replies-very helpful
US dollars. Get some JA after you get there. I didn't find a place that didn't take US. And bring some travelers checks. I had no problem getting JA or travelers checks cashed in Black River.
