Treasure Beach Forum: TB Runnin's: US Elections
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By TBNet on Tuesday, November 04, 2008 - 06:15 pm: Edit Post

Today is election day in the United States. We at TBNet would like to extend congratulations to all candidates and their supporters who have participated.

We would also like to remind our visitors that the Forum is non-political and we normally do not allow any type of political messages.

However, since this is a special day and many people are following the race very closely, we will allow a simple congratulation or condolence message for a particular candidate. For example "I would like to congratulate Candidate John Doe on his victory" or "I would like to offer my condolences on candidate John Doe on the loss of the race. You ran a good campaign"

Anything outside of these simple messages will not be accepted. Thank you for your understanding

-TBNet

Congratulations to President-Elect Obama on his message being embraced by the American people.

Condolences to John McCain, as no one can dispute, this man is a true American hero who has served his country faithfully for many many years.

Special congratulations to all those Americans who got out there and voted, especially those who voted for the first time, putting up with long waits and other obstacles. Yesterday, once again, showed us democracy can work when people take the time to participate and make their choices heard.

Hey, did you hear, Kenya has declared today a national holiday?

Congratulations to Barack Obama, our new Mr. President.

Frenchman Girl, I certainly appreciate your excitement and noting of the historic proportions of this election, but you had the facts quite jumbled; what you did was to "combine" the candidates running for America's top elected spots. Not all of them could win, and not all of them did.

To Proud American. I believe Frenchman Girl was stating the fact that no matter who won, either way, history would be made.

I can't believe we have a black president! I know, at some point he'll just become "the president" and we'll all be complaining about something he did or didn't do, but for now - WOW - amazing history we're all a part of. I'm so proud.

To M. - He is as much a black President as he is white. His Mother is white and he was raised by white grandparents? Why do people call him black? He is half black, half white or happa haole in Hawaii. Congratulations to our first half black President!

President Obama said a man is just a no matter the colour of his skin or the texture of his hair. We are going to work together and make this world a better place with the help of the almighty god.

Why do people call him Black ?
Because that is how he and the rest of the country identifies him.

It's strange to me too Obama Supporter.

Where did this black/white separation start?

It ends for me in myself.

This division of humans only helps those that divide and conquer and deepens ignorance of our proven interelatedness.

I can only hope that as time passes more of us will judge the 'book' by it's contents and not it's cover.

'White Hearted' and 'Black Hearted' is nothing to do with melanin content or hair type, it refers to attitude.

Lets call him everyones president, because all races voted to get him there. Lets also stand behind his administration and pray for their success.

Here's a portion of Obama's acceptance speech:

"This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America."

I don't think so, MikeyMike. Karen and Turey are right - out of many we are ONE. His heritage is half black and half white - not any more or any less than the other.

Finally, there is a global, collective psychological sigh. America has shown the world that it can be all-embracing.

Do not get me wrong.
I agree with the concept of "oneness", "brotherhood", and the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King.
However, you guys do not understand race relations in the U.S.
Yes Obama is truly of mixed race (so am I), but in America he is a "black man" (so am I)!
Funny thing that in Jamaica, everyone thinks that I am a white man beacuse I have light skin, but it is just the opposite here in the U.S.
I am sure Obama would be called a "blackman" in Jamaica, are least a "browman" because of the color of his skin.
The first time I went to the Pelican Bar in TB, Floyd and Ted had a debate as to weather I was Black are White :>)
But at the end of the debate, they both agreed that it did not matter what color I was, so I guess they agree with the teaching of Dr. King also :>)
ONE LOVE !!!!!! (no matter of race)
Mike

Yes Mike, in Ja, I am seen as 'white'. In the deep south, they are not quite sure; especially when I talk.

I am very aware of the advantages of playing 'white'. I am fortunate in that my conscience does not allow me to go against the reality that I am a member of the HUMAN race....first. Homo Sapiens, the thinking primates with the expanding neocortex and the older limbic center that processes emotion and challenges the higher centres of the brain for dominance in choice of action.

Neither the 'white' game nor the 'black' game is real or honest to me. I am not color blind, but am always aware that beneath skin their lies a being beyond the racial divisions that history has presented us all.

Some say this being or soul is composed of pure light and has access to memories more ancient than our bodies. I feel this at times and indeed it is an elevating concept. I'll report back if I can confirm this in my lifetime.

In the meantime, I remain an old boy with skin tones from brown through bright pink to a yellowish tint. Celtic and Taino reds with the higher melanin content of my Africans and an individuality that I am responsible for.

Peace and Love is what we were designed for, to approach this collective state only individual effort will work. Policies and laws may encourage this and discourage the outrages we have seen. From moment to moment, it is my responsibility to manifest what I am in reality and to be aware of the social programming errors that I have been encouraged to swallow whole.

Well Obama Supporter, as a half black, half white person myself, it's from first hand account that I can say that most people (present company excluded I guess)will identify him as a black man. He's about my hue :-) and no one has ever mistaken me for a white person.(in the US or JA) The historical significance of his being president cannot be denied. Plus, his cute little brown face is going to stand out (proudly) among the portrait gallery of Presidents. :-) THAT sir (or ma'am) just simply rocks. We've certainly come a long way as a country. I should note, that if McCain had won, the same monumental discussion of ground breaking USA events would be of discussion as well - a FEMALE vice president? I'll tell ya, my 70+ year old parents never expected to see this in their day. I'm glad they got to.

I fully understand race relations in the U.S. as a citizen of 55 years, and I do not consider him a Black President any more than he is a White President. I see him as Happa-haole Preident, which he is. Speak for yourself MikeyMike, but not for America.

With much pride, I'll say in agreement that this is a true "defining moment" The moment of change that makes history..."Yes we did"!!!

Obama Supporter
You must be the only American that do not see him as a "black man".
I truely understand where you are coming from, but I am willing to bet you that most Americans "black" and "white" and "all others" including the whole world see him as a "black man"
If not then why is it considered such a historical moment ?
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

Historical because he is half black or the first President of mixed race. He is equally white.

When all is said and done, Barack Obama has absolutely no illusions about who or what he is neither does the American electorate. Has anyone thought about how he defines himself?
