This is so sad; what are they doing to Jamaica--too much development I think;

Police in Jamaica are on the hunt for a group of thieves who "stole a beach" on the north coast of the island.

Close to 500 truck-loads of sand disappeared from the Coral Spring beach in July but so far none of the thieves have been caught, the BBC reports.

The land directly behind the beach was to have been turned into a $1 billion resort complex, but developers have since pulled out of the project.

Detectives have pointed the finger at the island's tourism industry, raising suspicions a hotel may have stolen the sand or purchased it to improve the
appearance of a nearby beach.

But the size of the theft has baffled local police and the government, even leading to claims of a police cover-up.

Jamaican Prime Minister, Bruce Golding has reportedly ordered an investigation into how the sand could have been stolen, while police are conducting forensic
tests to see if sand on any nearby beaches matches the stolen batch.

Jamaica's deputy commissioner for crime, Mark Shields, said it was not an open-and-shut case.

"It's a very complex investigation because it involves so many aspects," the BBC quoted him as saying.

"You've got the receivers of the stolen sand, or what we believe to be the sand. The trucks themselves, the organisers and, of course, there is some suspicion
that some police were in collusion with the movers of the sand."

It's good to know that JA has such forensic capabilities. I hope forensic investigation and tools will be used to assist in solving some of the heinous crimes(murder, rape, etc) and not wasted on sand that mother nature will hopefuly replace.
