Does anyone know how Treasure Beach got it's name? This is for a school project.
It is believed to have been coined by the man who established the Treasure Beach Hotel, a Mr. Dicker. The name reportedly started with the hotel, located in Frenchman, and gradually grew to be associated with the entire community, which previously was known as "Pedro" (from Pedro Plains).
HP you could be right. As a child I remember the area being referred to as Pedro. But as to TB itself I am not so sure that Mr Dicker was responsible for the name. I always thought it was so named as a result of a 17th century shipwreck and it was this ship that was responsible for the Treasure!
Incidentally, two cannon from this ship still lie in the small piece of reef between the Hotel and Frenchmans.
Like HP, this is the story I was told by my parents how Treasure Beach got its name. I remember Mr. Dicker myself and he still has family in the area.
I wonder who Pedro was.
Maybe more gold is there. So what. The real treasure is alive. No gold can buy that.
The people, land, sea and sky.
TB has cared for its treasure for generations.
Never sell out!
The name Pedro has nothing to do with Mr. Dicker. TB Hotel was built in Pedro. I am reaching out to Pedro Peeps, who I am almost positive, will shed some light on the subject.
P&P,
I don't know who was suggesting that the name Pedro had anything to do with Mr. Dicker. It is well established that the entire area had the name Pedro before Mr. Dicker came along.
Mr. Dicker (who was Canadian, I am told) reportedly came to Jamaica seeking a better climate for his asthmatic condition. He fell in love with this community and, established his small hotel. So positive was his experience, I understand, that he declared that he had found a "treasure" in the good health experience and the warmth of the people; hence the name Treasure Beach given to the property.
Gradually the name spread from the hotel to encompass the community.
Mr. Dicker is actually one of the heroes of Treasure Beach and should be given credit for his pioneering role in highlighting the beauty of this little piece of this spectacular island.
One of the first workers at the hotel was another of our "treasures", Mr. Fred Ward. Several other seniors who are still alive got their first taste of a job working at Treasure Beach hotel under the guidance of Mr. Dicker.
