Can someone please help in telling me how much it would take for me and my elderly mother to retire in Jamaica.
I have my own home so no rent.
My home is two bedrooms.
I will be using a gas stove with small cylinder.
I will go to Cross Roads to the superkmarket for grocery shopping, hopefully I can get fresh produce there also.
I have a house phone-- with my fridge as the only appliance to use electricity.
My mother will get free medicine from the clinic.
She will make her quarterly visit to her Doctor.
How much does a private taxi charges round trip to Black River?
Thanks for your help. (We are not rich)

Hi Cherry:

Just try it. Take it a day at a time. Returning to and living in Jamaica is really what you make of it. I have returned and am doing the best I can and loving it.

Cherry, make sure any pension or other money coming to you or your mom comes into your local accounts.

As far as I know Cross Roads market is still going strong and Coronation market cool down now and is being reconditioned. The supermarkets now have most things we get abroad, some things cheaper, some not.

A trip to Papine market will get you fresh mountain grown stuff.

Sellers will have a genuine smile and special greeting as they get to know you and your wants.

Couldn't miss the chance to plug my other hometown.

Thanks to you all for your info but what I am trying to understand is the monthly budget it will be money wise for us. WE EAT MOSTLY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.fISH AND CHICKEN. LOVE EVERY AND ALL SOUPS. Roughly what I am looking for is the amount is will cost monthly money wise to live comfortably. Thanks again. "OUR HOME WILL BE IN TREASURE BEACH".

Cherry, convert what you spend monthly to JA dollars and it would basically cost you the same to live here. My neighbor who is retired from England, and is living very comfortable tells me she would not have been able to live off her pension if she was still in England.

I have gone to stores and convert the dollar and compare prices and in a lot of instances the price here is more affordable.

Food vans come around with produce. You can buy some fruit & veggies from them and save taxi fare.

Hi Cherry, You and I are in a very similar situation. I will also be retiring with my elderly mother to a 2 bedroom house in round hill. I'm building now but expect it to be paid off by the the time building is complete. We also plan to live very simply and are definitely not rich:-). It's hard to tell you what to expect to pay monthly because each family is unique but I do think that once you no longer have a mortgage or rent to pay you'll be able to manage expenses much more easily - at least that's what I'm hoping! If you'd like to talk more about this feel free to email me at: dotchere@hotmail.com I'd love to hear from you.
All the best....

Off course Cross Roads St Elisabeth!...duh.

Anyway Kingston has most everything that one can get in foreign, sometimes you jus have to hunt.

Living simple, one hardly has to go far from the area you will be in. And...the stress will be considerably less.
