Just wondering how we could get a program in place for the residents of TB/ Great bay who need literacy tutoring. Wouldn't it be great if like the health fair, if we could get a teacher be it foreign or jamaican, as part of their work experience for a period of time to tutor and take literacy classes. I believe there is a great need in the area and it would lead to more jobs and entrepreneurial attitudes for the youth. I know of only 2 people doing this in the area and both are volunteers and full up. This is truley necessary for the community and just extremly important for the future.

'Concerned' you are right that there is a need. I have been writing for small grants for the last two years to try to fund a teacher/tutor training program for the TB area, but not getting any play. I am currently working on yet another proposal. The funder seems interested, so that may lead somewhere. They have a long request review process, though, so even if they say yes, I won't know for a few months. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this.

I cannot understand why others have not commented on this issue, people talk about helping treasure beach often, and this is such a big way that can help. I think that the women's group could be used as a tutoring center and classes could be held there. Be it one on one or in a class like setting. Girlgriot thank you for writing the grants. I truly wish that a tutor voluenteer system could be set up to help the many people who have left school and still cannot read or write past 25 words.
If only the government would relise this dyer problem exists and include more trained teachers at schools to help kids who cannot keep up in class and have troubles in learning in the jamaican conventional way. This would put an end to a 19yr old not knowing how to read. However the probability of that happening is very slim, therfore it needs to be a non government orgainisation that does this...So many need help.
