TBNet Forum: TB Runnin's: FIRST REPORT FROM REBECCA!!!
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By TBNet on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

I just got a phone call from Rebecca! I was the fitst she was able to contact. She had to go up to munro area to get service.

She reports that no one has been killed in the TB area!!! No mention of any one injured either!

However, there are other reports of a drowning in Great Bay Also, she heard that 20 fishermen stayed on the Keys and no word from them. Also, Some fishermen in Black river anchored out to sea and no word from them either.

Rebecca is shaken up but is OK.

There is massive damage though...

Most roofs on houses are gone, including hers.

Most trees have been knocked down, including lignum vitaes! For the trees that are standing ,therre are no leaves on the branches

There is water from the sea at Woddy's Shop at the end of fisherman's lane!

Sea water went through Golden Sands to the Cashah tree

If you want to send aid, send it to the US Embassy or to the Peace Corps. I will get addresses after posting this initial report.

If you want to send something to an indicudual, send it to the person care of rebecca Wiersma

Miss Ruby lost half of her roof but is OK.

More very soon!

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers. We still have to rebuild, but worst is over!

Please let us know what we can do...even though we are thousands of miles away in England we will do whatever we are able.
Best wishes to everyone...what a massive relief.

Any word from Southfield, Top Hill, Junction, and those areas? Haven't been able to hear from them by phone. Thanks

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By TBNet on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 02:20 pm:

Rebecca wanted to make it clear that while the area is devastated, the people are in good spirits, hugging each others, helping each other, and talking about how to rebuild already.

She was shocked to hear of the reports of looting around the country as there has been NONE of that in TB.

She has only been able to get to Calabash and Frenchmans's Bay and up through southfield to munro area.

She hasn't been to Great bay, Billy's Bay, or Fort Charles or beyond.

Some messages she wants to get out:

-Guilty's house has been destroyed

-Miss Ruby's house has lost half its roof, but she and Cida (sp?) are safe

-Miss Clem's house is OK, no flooding or other damage.

-The Treasure Beach Womens' Group's building has been destroyed.

The immediate need is for money, then food. She and Jason are meeting soon to talk about how TBNet and Breds can start to get relief supplies/money down there. More soon.

Is there any news of Southfield? Has anyone heard from Micheal or Denny Soares of the Soares Bakery? Any news about Carla Parchment and her family? Those are my father, brother, and cousin. Also any news about anyone in Southfield at all would be appreciated. I got through this morning to Mandeville and there is a lot of roof damage and homes being flooded. I have been trying to get through again, but can't. Also has anyone heard from Ms. Carrie Forrest and her family in particular, we are hearing here that Mas Johnny, her husband is missing. Her son Doane was my brother-in-law and we are very worried about all of St. Elizabeth and the people there. Please is any news please email me at Soareslong@aol.com. Thank you and please everyone stay safe. We are praying for you all.

Now that I've made a few phone calls on Rebecca's behalf and have had time to take a deep breathe, here's more on what she's reported.

She rode out the storm with her good friends Esther, Lisa and Joslyn from Calabash House along with a whole heap of dogs and cats in her house. They remained safe through out the storm, even though her concrete house was shaking during the worst of it. She told the joke that the only thing louder than the sound of the hurricane was Lisa's snoring (sorry Lisa :-). At least someone was able to sleep through it!

She's got standing water in her house and the water heater is broken, which may be the reason for the water in the house. Its unclear. The roof is gone, as are most of the roofs in the area.

She is safe and will be staying with Lisa in her wood board house that is was not damaged. I lived in that house for a few months and while I know its incredibly well constructed, it amazes me that its still standing. To the builder (German Mark, I think, good job!)

It is still raining down there, and she was very happy to hear that Ivan is moving away which should give them some better weather.

More damage reports:

Calabash House is destroyed

Miss Mary of Ital Rest/Vikings is OK as is everyone else there. But the roof of her house is gone.

Mar Blue fared very well, and the guests have moved back in (what a vacation!)

Villa JaJa has some water in it, but is still standing and seems to have fared pretty good as well.

Cacona Beach Cottage has flooding damage (I think she said 6 feet of water) and the sand berm by the sea has 10 vertical feet gone.

She is only able to get a cell signal by Munro area. She said the road is passable but pretty mashed up. She saw a gas station open (at Corssroads?) and assumes they have gas.

She had not heard anything from the rest of the island and didn't even know where they eye had passed. They are only able to get one radio station out of Sav-la-mar and says it doesn't have much news. I'm trying to keep her posted on what I know. She was happy to hear the storm is moving away

The area does not have current (electricity) or land lines, so she is not able to check this web site, so she can't see any messages left for her. When I speak to her, I will relay them.

She is able to charge her cell phone from her bus and thinks she has enough phone cards to hold out. When I hear more, I'll post it here immediately.

She also wanted me to tell everyone how much the people of TB are thankful for your prayers and messages of hope.

Everyone she's seen in the area has come up and given her a hug and asked how to help. They are walking around and grateful to be alive and are laughing at times about the situation.

In fact as she and Darin James were talking, a group of men walked by in the distance. When Darin waved to them to say Hi, they came running over because they thought Darin was calling them to help her.

Positive vibes, Positive Treasure Beach!

Ya Mon! Right on! Have been on this internet constantly since Saturday morning. So has Eric, fantastic job! Thank you Eric, from the bottom of our hearts!!
Someone up there has answered ALL the prayers, and there were many!!
I read somewhere that the man who drowned was trying to save his boat. Not sure where I read this, as I've been to every website all last night and this morning, so has been kind of a weary start to the day. Anyway, time to rebuild, as long as we have each other, everything is going to be OK. We'll be there in February, wish we could be there now . . . . . . . . . .
We Love Treasure Beach, and take good care of each other!!

I have been speaking to her Mom in Florida over the past few days, and we've been doing our best to convey any news to each other.

My sister Ann Forrest and her family, my grandmother-in-law Beulah Clarke (the twins, Ryan and Deron's grandmother), Ruby Parchment, Zane Ebanks and the Rochester Family (Marie, Kareen, Stacey and Neville). Many of us here in Florida have lots of family in Great Bay and are anxious to know they are well. Thanks again for going above and beyond as you always do. Keep your spirits high.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Allison Hill on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 05:42 pm:

Just got off the phone with my husband Tojo Hill:
He says:

Jake's doesn't look the same. The sea broke the door in Mussles guest cottage in two pieces. Several verandahs on the guesty cottages are gone. The sea was breaking over the swimming pool. The sea took the doors off the front and back of the guest cottages and threw them near the road. Jack Sprat is damaged but they plan to rebuild starting tomorrow. The sea was hitting the back of the car wash located beside the entry to Jack Sprat.

Treasure Beach does not look the same so hold tight to any good memories you had of the landscape.
80% of the people have lost their roof. You could have surfed on the sea right at Irie Vibes. There are no fruit or leaves on the trees. Several trees are fallen across the road. Lots fo tlight poles are down. They have no light, no water...but just got back telephone. The roads are not badly damaged and they did not get as 1/2 as much rain as they did in hurricane Charley so the roads are not flooded. They are still having rain though.

Golden Sands has 2 guest houses that are mashed up. Winford's roof is gone. Half of Sparling Waters is gone.

Two houses came down in Billy's Bay (older homes). 2 board houses in Bluntas overturned.

Hikaru is safe (Don, Noel and the guests there are all safe).

Dawn is O.K. Calabash House lost its roof.

Celeste and David at Siwind are O.K. No mudslides there to report at all.

Denny Soares of the Soares Bakery lost part of his roof but he is o.k.

In response to Cherry B.'s posting....lots of roofs on houses are gone in Lewis Town, but your family is o.k.

All of this news comes from Tojo Hill who called me in Canada at 7:30 p.m. Sincerely, Allison

Thank you so much for the up date, It is so good to hear that friends and family are alright. Could anyone tell me how Tranquility Bay came through. I know that Jay and the staff are ok, but does anyone know how the building held up!

The only thing I've heard about Santa Cruz is at http://stormcarib.com/reports/2004/jamaica.shtml

Looks like the same as TB...damage but no deaths.

Best of luck!

Hello. I am grateful for the news from people so caring about the need of everyone for up to date info. If anyone has info about the Siloah area in St. Elizabeth, please post here. I am concerned about Dezrene and her children, and Mr. Cerease, father to Dezrene's brothers, among them Wayde and Dane. Thank you. Sister Diana

Everyone in Canada is relieved to hear of no deaths.
We've tried phoning but with no luck yet.
What supplies are needed most?
Any word of Vannie, Viv, Dennis, Bebe etc?
Does Folichon still exist? have a roof?
Any news would be appreciated.
Thank you for keeping those of us around the globe plugged in to the place where we leave our hearts.
Peter

Hey all,
glad to hear everyone is safe at least.
i have a ticket down for Sept. 21 and still plan on coming.
question: what would be the most useful thing for me to bring down from the states?
i'm prepared to try for anything i can carry.
and hope to help out with anything i can when i get there.

To Lucy and everyone who wants to go to Jamaica at this time:

As Rebecca told me when I said I'm ready to go down there to help, with all the houses that have been damaged and the supplies that will be dwindling, they can't take care of themselves right now, let alone visitors.

My advice is to donate money/goods when appropriate, and wait to go down there until there is a system in place to handle visitors/aid workers.

As for donating, there are links to several here and in other messages on this site.

We'll be working with Breds to create a plan for direct donations to TB in the near future.

Stay tuned and thanks to eveyone for your offeres of help.

A blessing that all seem to have made it through. People are more important than belongings. Concerned about the food and water situation and look forward to hearing how we might help. Glad to hear Mar Blue made it out pretty well but have not heard about SPARKLING WATERS and the GANG so are a little concerned. We'll have lots of work to do when we get there in October!! LOVE and PRAYERS to all. Susan & David

My mind is at ease tonight...Thank God for TB.net with out this website we would have no idea about the state of things in St Elizabeth. Thank God for also spearing Jamaica a direct hit. I need to know about the situation in Great Bay...Has any heard any news from Margaret Deleon, Wayne (Bongo), Simone, Donovan Deleon? My Aunt Doris Richie? Any new from Great Bay would be helpful. Lets keep this positive vibes going. Kingston would do well to learn a lesson from the folks in TB. God bless you all.

Thank you all for the posts and updates. I have been glued to the tv for weather updates and they only show scenes from Kingston. My daughter goes to school in TB and I am glad to hear that the community has come together to check on each other and that there was not major damage or lives lost.

TB has been the one place in the world that I have ever felt real peace. I look forward to coming back soon and look forward to helping however the Lord allows me to.

God bless everyone in TB.

Elsewhere on the board there are reports that either the roof is missing at Sparkling Waters or one of the waterside villas "fell into the sea".

I assume PEOPLE are OK there, only heard of property damage.

I wonder too, as we are to go there in 2 weeks, guess we'll find out more soon.

Thank God this storm seems to have spared lives.

Thanks a million for the news. Rebecca, Joslyn & Dawn, we are especially glad to hear you are safe. We have so many requests: St. Peter's Church, The Tullochs, Henrys, Blairs, Ebanks, and on and on. Give them all our love. What about the Diabetic Clinic at Pedro Plains? Our love to Miss Ruby.

Do you have anymore news regarding Black River, Barbary Hall or any of the other Anglican or Methodist Churches in St. Elizabeth?

We are so sorry to hear about Calabash House. Will communicate later about it.

I was scheduled to arrive in Jamaica, Sept. 15, but have cancelled based on probably no roads and being more in the way than a help. I don't even know if the flight will be going.

If anyone has contact with Black River, please let Mrs. Joyce Frances, Allison & David Morris, and Father & Mrs. Wint know that we have written.

Love and prayers to you all.
tom & Mary Ellen and all of the rest of our Indiana Team
