If you have any links or information for how to get help down to Jamaica, please post it here to get the word out.

Also, if you would like information on how to contribute your time, services, or money, you can post here and hopefully someone will be able to assist you.

TBNet doesn't have any defined plan to provide relief* at this time. But we can provide a place for donors and those who can use the materials together to meet their goals.

*But I'm sure the half of TBNet on the ground down there started providing relief and comfort as soon as it was safe to come out, wouldn't you Rebecca. Take care of yourself and I'm almost afriad to see the pictures from this one. We'll all hoping and praying for the best for you and all of the Carribean that has been devastated by this storm. Hang in there, partner!

-Eric

Hi this is Jason Henzell's (Jake's) girlfriend Laura, I'm up in Boston right now but I just wanted to let everyone know that we've been in touch a lot -- and that he weathered the storm ok up by Monroe with the Ropers. I haven't heard from him today yet... he'll be heading back to TB -- he couldn't yesterday because the weather was so bad still. I'm sure he's just taking everything in and will get back to me as soon as he can -- I'll keep you posted. As for relief, Jason is the chairman and co-founder of BREDS as most of you know -- in any case after Charley he/they set up an account in Black River for victims... I think that might also be a great way to help the community DIRECTLY. When he has the chance/I hear from him, I'll get the details and post them on the site. Until, I'll let him know how concerned everyone is about th area... its been an amazing outpouring. Thank you. One love. Laura

Eric/Laura: I know you are going to let us know how we can help as soon as you know, and I'm ready and willing just give the word.
In the meantime, I want to send money to individuals but the Western Union is in Black River and the Paymaster is in Junction and this would be impossible for people in TB to get to for days if not longer, do you know of any other way to wire money closer?

Now that the rush of new info is fading, I'm starting to think about how to get money down directly to Treasure Beach. There are already established routes for getting money to general relief to Jamaica, but I know there are several of you who want to make sure your efforts go specifically to TB.

As I mentioned somewhere today, Rebecca and Jason talked today and decided to hold a meeting with others to figure out how to get whatever's needed down there. That means TBnet and Breds at least behind the effort.

Since I run the web sites for both, I figure I will end up doing whatever the technical/internet side of it is :-). I'd better get up to speed on options.

Does anyone have knowledge in the area of transferring money down to Jamaica, or anywhere for that matter. All I'm aware of is transferring money via Western Union or directly bank to bank. What else is there?

I'm off to google now to see what I can find.

According to a post on jamaicans.com (page one of Ivan Hurrican Relief)

http://www.jamaicans.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=043066

You can send funds via moneygram up to $300.00 for a flat rate of $10.00, I was on their site and did not see any mention of this though, and I do not know where the money could be picked up locally by TB. Maybe someone else here might know?

Eric, recently I used Senvia/Caribpay to send money to Jamiaca. People can send from the US, UK or Canada to Jamaica. The sender must choose an account "receiver" in Jamaica. Senvia services are available through the NCB bank in Black River. The cost is minimal-----about $2 for the sender to deposit, and then $5 is debited befoe the recipient withdraws the funds. Go to Senvia.com Perhaps someome could setup a TB receiver account....God Bless!

Money Grams can be sent from on line or from any Walmart in the states and picked up at any moneygram or bank location in Jamiaca. The site www.moneygram.com gives all locations. It is similar to western union but much more reasonable. If you go to a walmart they have a moneygram club so that fees are even more reasonable. Again, the site gives a complete list of locations where money can be picked up.

Hi, this is Kathy in Boston ... friend of Rebecca's ... I read someone asking how we may be able to get money directly to TB ... how about if Eric sets up a pay pal account? I think that will allow people to send funds directly through email to help Rebecca/TB directly ... if you need any more information .. let me know. The website is www.paypal.com

Well before this disaster, I filed papers with the U.S. IRS for the TREASURE BEACH FOUNDATION, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation designed to benefit the residents of Treasure Beach, primarily for educational and healthcare needs.

Though the filing is not yet approved by the IRS, I was advised this morning by counsel that there is a 90%+ chance the IRS will approve the filing, thus making all donations from U.S. residents tax-deductible. (The probability is that the filing will not be approved until 2005; however, as soon as that happens your contributions -- even if made today -- will be tax-deductible.)

Should you wish to make a donation of any amount of money to assist with the Ivan aftermath, please send your check to:
TREASURE BEACH FOUNDATION
11124 Rich Meadow Drive
Great Falls, VA 22066-1415
(Attention: Karen Kennedy)

100% of your donations will immediately be passed on for use in helping the residents of Treasure Beach.

Thank you!!

OK, after a couple hours of sleep I woke up and read the posts about a Paypal account.

Don't ask me why I didn't start on this last Friday, I really should have. But better late than never, I hope.

I have a paypal account, but haven't used it for a while. And reading their website, I didn't get clear answers that I need, or at least not clear enough for me right now.

Let me ask those who already know:
How do people give money to a paypal account? Do they also need a paypal account as well?

What information do I need to provide to someone wanting to make a donation? My paypal account number, or the email address its connected to or???

I see from their site that you can get a paypal ATM card to withdrawl. This doesn't seem feasible for those down in TB who'll need to money. So I'm asuming I can transfer from the paypal account directly to a bank account. Is this correct?

What else do I need to know about the working of paypal?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Update from Laura on Jakes/from Jason Henzell

Spoke to Jas late last night -- he'd had a long long day assessing the damage on and around the property. Pretty much any room on the water was flooded out by the sea, doors, decks and some windows. The basic structures are fine though, lots of seaweed and some roof damage. Jason expects to have JackSprat Restaurant and the main restaurant/office up and running in about two weeks... after which the hotel will slowly reopen (he projects being 'back to normal' as possible in about 2 months) and will start taking reservations on an availibilty basis. If any of you know Jason he is a determined kinda guy so he'll meet that deadline if not finish before hand.

At a glance Jason said that the rest of the community seems ok. Damage to roofs mainly, Pebro Bank school was badly damaged, but Sandy Bank was ok. He says the flooding wasn't actually as bad as with Charley although there's still some water around.

TB is thankfully accessible -- he drove there yesterday.

TB hotel and Sunset Villa also had some structural damage.

There is still no electricity, water or landline service. Cells (including Digicel) are working on and off -- so keep trying if you're having a rough time.

It's going to take time, teamwork and money but Jake's and Treasure Beach on a whole will bounce back.

There was no loss of life and that's the most important thing.

As for the relief fund, he wants to think up a plan of distribution before he takes anyone's money, which is completely understandable. We're working on ideas and I'll get back to you. I think the next couple days are just going to be about sorting things out and getting everyone's head around what exactly has happened.

All the staff are fine -- millie , peanut and humphrey too. Even the acacia trees put up a good fight.

He was so moved to hear about everyone's concern and thanks you all.

I'll keep you posted.

One love. Laura

Hi I think that to use paypal to make a payment you already need to have a paypal account. In order to pay the money into your paypal account all that is needed is the e-mail address that you you use on your account. You can then have the money transferred immediately into your account.
As with a lot of other people I would be more than happy to send some money to help out.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Lynnette on Monday, September 13, 2004 - 10:24 am: Edit Post

Eric I don't think the problem is getting the money transferred, Xoom.com uses paypal, the problem is getting a location close to TB for pick up. Maybe BREDS can be the point for $$ pick up, if a person put a paypal, credit card, bank transfer to the Black River account, then maybe BREDS could set up a way to have the funds picked/distributed to individuals up in TB. Perhaps this could be worked out with Rebecca and Jason when they talk.

Hi everyone, there are several folks who are willing to assist victims but feel unsure about donating monies. Let us know by what other means these individuals can contribute. The organization (CHILD organization)that I am assisting is mainly interested in helping children, schools. I am getting reports that some schools have been severely damaged. Right now, I am interested in obtataining donations of children's books and other school supplies--pencils, crayons, workbooks, etc. The organization is registered in the USA and contributions are tax-deductable. We are accepting donations from all over--abroad and locally. I can be reached at any of the following:

Paypal accounts are free Eric. People just need to go to paypal.com and set them up. They also need to have a bank account or credit card connected to the paypal service for the money to be deducted from. Its like a glorified direct deposit system. The money people send to you will go directly to your account. You will also be notified for each transaction making tracking easy.

Eric, there has been some media attention in the States regarding paypal issues. Paypal is not a bank and therefore not FDIC insured. I purchased something once through paypal, and proceeded to receive an onslaught of email viruses for about 2 months through a paypal stream. You can read more: http://www.paypalwarning.com/

I recently wired money from a US Credit Union (Swift network) to a ScotiaBank account for a flat fee of $45 (on a rather large amount); Senvia charges $7 per transaction, and is affiliated with NCB Bank.

I just got an email from Debbi (Rebecca's sister, right, Debbi?):

I just got off the phone with Food for the Poor and they are beginning preparations to provide relief for Jamaica. The great news is St. Elizabeth Parish / Treasure Beach is part of their distribution center. They have a team departing tomorrow to provide assessments and the food/supplies should be going out within the next couple of days as well.

I will continue to stay in touch with them to provide a better timeframe.

Seems so rediculous now when people don't even have homes, but it will be there anyday, might even be in Spanish Town waiting to clear customs. How did Sandy Bank and Great Bay Schools fare anyway? Hi. I'm new to this website and I've yet to visit TB, though I have plans to do so in January. I would like to help, and since I work in a bookstore and since my husband is also a children's illustrator, books seem like a natural thing for us to donate. Is there an address directly in TB that we can send a shipment to? What kinds of books are most wanted--picture books, chapter books, young adult? Fiction? Non-fiction? Is there a way to mark the parcel as a donation so that no duty has to be paid on the receiving end? Sorry to sound naive. I'm eager to help and would appreciate any info that y'all can send my way. In the meantime, my heart goes out to the folks down there in the process of rebuilding their lives.

Does anyone have news from Treasure Beach about Sandy & Cookie??? This is alex and Jonna and EVERYBODY who loves them here in San Francisco - we need to know if you are okay and how your place fared!!

Over in Walkerswood (St. Ann) - we did fine at Bromley - our brand new roof (last shingle nailed day before Ivan hit) didn't lose a shingle - some trees down but we are all worried sick about TB. No idea how Jungle Hut did over in Ochy.

Love from us all.

OK, we're up and running with a paypal account. Check out the information on how to:

1) Donate to TB funds by check or credit card or or paypal account

2) Send money to individuals

3) Donate to general Jamaican relief funds. (Let's not forget this one, folks. Lots of areas of the country aren't as fortunate as TB to have as many patrons as it does).

TBNet is only in charge of the paypal accounts, so we can't help with the others.

If you have problems with the using the electronic donation, please contact me at webmaster@treasurebeach.net.

Be generous and remember what Treasure Beach and its residents have given to you over the years.

We already had our first donation. Mike and his wife who's name I don't know have started us off with US$250! Thanks Mike!

And Judy, the new owner of Doubloon, has told Rebecca to use US$1000 already in a Jamaican account immediately! Thanks Judy!

Can someone please post the names and address of the Western Union locations closest to Treasure Beach. I know one is in Junction and in Black River.

I've been in touch with W.U.'s corporate office and they want to help us. They are waiting on appoval to offer fee rebates to those with receipts of wire transfers to Jamaica. However the problems is that most locations are still down due to the loss of power. Please post the information on the W.U. locations so that we can let Western Union know which ones they are.

I directed Leslie from W.U., to the website and she was very moved by the out pour of love and support displayed through our website. She personally is going to do everything in her power to help us.

One Love,

Eric, Rebecca and all others:

I just got off the phone with Western union. They said that they will be making an announcement for Jamaica, Caymen, Grenada etc. in Canada, England and US for a start, but it will be world wide. They will be reducing fees and will be making a donation to the Red Cross, $10,000 and also mentioned a %50,000 donation. They are very interested in helping, but must coordinate the effort and get approval from head office. At least it is of some help.

I just got off the phone and Rebecca says that she read in the newspaper that Western Union is operating in Jamaica. She doubts the Black River shop is open since its locaed so close the the sea, but said the Junction and Soouth Field branches should be operating. But that's not confirmed. She'll try to confirm and get back to me.

The Western Union at The Junction Pharmacy is the closest one I could find on the internet. However, it is not up and running yet. I gave the information to Leslie Johnson at Western Union. She said she would contact me personally when that location is operational. I'll keep you all posted on progress.

The Western Union people are very nice.

I called Western Union this evening and they said they would take the wire transfer but it would be put on hold until the electricity was back on. She couldn't tell me which locations were up and running yet, but they got hourly updates. I'll call again in the morning and let ya know what I find out.

I have several friends I want to help with new roofs, but couldn't afford to help them all. I reached out to my coworkers asking for money this afternoon. I sent an email to probably 200 people, begging for help. Within 7 minutes I had $110, within 40 minutes $485. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Now if only I could get it Jamaica. I must say this made me feel better at least I can do something over here in Cali.

I'll call again late afternoon.

Having just sent funds to it , can confirm that the WESTERN UNION in Junction, St. Elizabeth, at the JUNCTION PHARMACY/Main Street (+876.926-2454)
is OPEN/phone and transfer lines operating. It's closer than Black River.

I just called that number (876-926-2454) and the operator informed me that the Junction Pharmacy is not up yet. The closest Western Union to TB that is up and running is in Manchester.

I just called Western Union Int'l Services and they said Junction and Black River were not open, but they could confirm Santa Cruz sight was.

I called Junction Pharmacy directly 10am Wed and they said they open...regardless, I'd rather have funds there already for people to pick up whatever the next opening time since Junction's more likely to open faster than Black River.

A friend of mine just told me that people from Grenada living here in Canada are writing to Oprah asking for some help for the people in Grenad. She said that Oprah's publicists said if she receives 100 letters, she will send up to $250,000 worth of goods to Grenada.
A lot of help is needed to take care of the damage done in Treasure Beach and surrounded areas, maybe we can get some help from her too.
So, if we have a moment or two, can we please do a quick letter and fax it to: Lisa Holiday-Oprah show - 312-633-1976.
We can try, if she decides to help that would be great.

The credit card option for Paypal is not working. I am wondering if others are running out of time. (Session times out] I have tried two different computers and no luck.

Western Union have reduced their rates in Canada: up to $100 is $9. up to $200 is $13.

A big Big up to Eric and Rebecca. I think that both of you need to take a rest despite the never ending work. If not you will burn yourselves out. So take a deep breath and everyone will be better off. We love you both.

Bless up

Tina & Mike

A big hello to Stuart and Shirley

regarding donations: who and how will it be determined/ decided where, who, how much...etc will be distributed? Is there a "triage" system in place? I have many friends and family that would like to donate but are concerned where exactly the money will go. Please let us know. I hope you didn't already explain it (and I missed that email!!) sorry if you did. Thanks to everyone. prayers and support always.

Good question, Joanne.

As listed on the relief page (http://treasurebeach.net/guide/ivan/ivanrelief.html) the money collected for the TBNet Relief Fund will go to people in TB and St. Elizabeth.

The Treasure Beach Foundation Fund, which this site does not control, is earmarked for TB alone. Karen, would you care to comment on how these will be used?

A Relief team has been composed of community members and Breds.org (http://breds.org/) officers to determine the need and distribute the money to the neediest first.

The team is meeting every day at 9am to go over what has been learned and needs to be done. There is a group of two people assigned to each area in TB which is going out and talking to people to assess their needs.

The neediest of TB are being taken care of first, then the rest. They are also starting to expand their efforts to surrounding areas.

The current plan is to meet the basic needs of clean water and food, which is being done. There are no reported shortages except for fresh fruits and vegetables. Potable water is tight, but available.

When rebuilding needs are assessed, the most money in the TBNet Fund will be used purchase building supplies and they given to residents who will then be able to rebuild their homes.

There aren't too many more details at this point, but if you have any more questions please ask.

Treasure Beach Foundation will be donating to residents of Treasure Beach only; this includes Fort Charles, Billy's Bay, Frenchman's, Calabash Bay, and Great Bay. The money will be apportioned based upon true need. Though I am sure everyone is in need of something, these funds will be used for disaster relief for those who are most in need and unable to help themselves -- and do not have the "luxury" of offshore employers and relatives who will be helping them out. (For instance, we consider it our personal responsibility to put a new roof back on Miss Verlin's house; so funds for that would never come out of the Treasure Beach Foundation.)

I will be meeting with Rebecca, Jason, Sheila Hamilton, Aman Parchment and other members of the community as soon as I get down there -- most probably on 9/29 -- to have them help me determine where the money I am collecting might best be spent.

I plan to use some of the money to be able to carry down a supply of needed items such as Neosporin and such things which can be purchased much more inexpensively here in the U.S. than in Jamaica.

Checks are coming in to me daily, but I urge anyone who has not yet contributed through any of the different relief organizations to do so NOW. Send a check to Treasure Beach Foundation, or get your money down there via PayPal or some other means. JUST DO IT. PLEASE!!

For those concerned about where will your donation go, the CHILD Organization will deliver. You name who/what/where and we will personally take the funds to these people. We will even obtain receipts if you so desire. I live in Florida, but it will take me a few minutes to board Air Jamaica. Why? This is part of my life. I know many of these victims personally, by name. Contact me if you need further info.

Andrew Azar, owner of the Sparkling Waters villas, just left Treasure Beach after unloading piles of sheets of zinc, saltfish, and lots of other non-perishable food for community residents. He trucked it in from Kingston. And, he'll be back again with wood and other supplies. Since some of the zinc went to Miss Verlin, we'll personally donate what that would have cost us -- and pass that needed money on to others.

Peter and I will be down on Tuesday, 9/28, and will stay for 15 days to do what we can. (Yes, your checks will be deposited in our absence -- and the money will be forwarded down to Treasure Beach.)

I mentioned the Oprah idea to Rebecca. She was going to run it by the TB women's Groups to see if they could get a letter writing campaign going down there as well.

We'll see.

CHILD Organization wishes to thank the many individuals who have been calling and sending in donations to assist those in need. Here in Florida, donation is fairly tight, because the state has also suffered tremendous damage. Besides, many Floridians with Caribbean connections are busy assisting family and loved ones back in the islands, who have also been impacted by Ivan.

Quite a few individuals have been giving us donations toward specific individuals, groups and causes. I have a few dollars for Rebecca to help buy gas, and whatever else. I'm working hard to collect few more dollars, then I'll make a trip to Treasure Beach and surrounding areas (which is soon).

I am asking that our readers of goodwill continue to support this cause. It is an extraordinary way to touch humanity. The last time I was in Jamaica, I visited a ninety-year-old in Bethany. Hurricane Charley flooded and forced her out of her home. She lost basically everything. She went to live with her daughter, and now Ivan blew that roof off. It's hard for those of us who are a bit more fortunate to turn our backs on circumstances like these. Anyone reading this and wishes to donate, please do so.

I ask that we continue to give--ask for support from friends, workmates, bosses, and organizations, and keep the aid rolling in.

By the way, has anyone heard from Bigwoods? It was hit pretty bad by Charley. It is around there nestled in a little corner.
