Even if you don't win the big package, you do get pictures of the children whose scholarships you help to fund. Mine are on the fridge and I love seeing the fresh, smiling faces and thinking about the potential they have and the opportunity they receive from this program.

You can find info on this site about the Treasure Beach Foundation and is efforts, but its probably easier to go to their site: www.treasurebeachfoundation.org

Hi Dennis. I recall you from prior raffles. Last year, our bank made an exception for money orders; but this year they refuse to do so. I am really sorry. I suggest you ask someone with a U.S. checking account to make a check out to Treasure Beach Foundation, give them the cash, and mail me that check along with your contact information. You could mail cash, but if it gets lost, it's gone. Hope you'll find a way to enter.

Suzettte, there aren't a particular number of tickets to be sold. We sell as many as we can to help raise money for the students' scholarships. If you are asking to get a better idea of the odds of winning, I can tell you we've historically sold in the hundreds.

Keep up the good work Karen.
It is so important to educate as many as possible, and especially against big odds sometimes.
I pay school fees for a young boy in Kingston and it is $150,000 a year (he is 8), and that does not include the cost of getting him to school and back, lunch money etc.
Don't know how parents can afford one childs tuition these days and expenses, much less two or more.
I ask all you TB.net readers, to please give what you can ... as there is no better cause.

Has anyone stayed at Rainbow Tree? Can you tell me anything about it, the staff or anything else. Yes, I know not to expect tuxedos.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Maria on Thursday, April 30, 2009 - 05:37 pm: Edit Post

No tuxedos. Merely the best villa in which I ever stayed. I don't know where to start. The staff is THE BEST. You get TWO cooks/housekeepers; I think they try to outdo each other in the food prep department. Oh, plus Miss Verlin in the morning to have the coffee and juice ready when you wake up. The villa is huge. The bedrooms are wonderful, including the mattresses. (We are very picky about that.) Very large living room. Enormous verandah. Great pool with sun shelters. Big beach. New sweet outside kitchen for jerk and grilled lobster. GO!!

To Potential - I would buy a ticket if it meant winning a free stay in a hut on the beach! Rainbow Tree looks like a palace, they are all a palace if they are located in TB :-) Go for it, it is a fantastic cause!!!!

Fabulous villa, very private and spacious, with lovely pool and views. A bit farther down the road in Billy's Bay than other places, but easy to get rides or bicycle wherever you want to go. Nice art collection and decor, too, especially all the photos taken over the years, and the staff will welcome you like family. By all means, get a ticket (or five).

We stayed at Rainbow Tree in February with group of 6 adults and 3 children. We've all travelled extensively for years, and this was far and away the best vacation any of us had ever been on. We are already booked for next February. Total privacy, beautiful accommodations, great food, and a staff who felt like family by the time the week ended. It was just ultimately relaxing, you really feel like you are at home, (that is, if your home is in paradise!)

As we go through tough economic times around the globe, it is those at the lower end of the scale that suffer the greatest impact and it is at these times that we all need to show our support. The raffle heps to provide a safety net of continuing education for students that would otherwise not have an opportunity. This is a community of hardworking people who deserve a helping hand.

I second all Maria and got my tickets have to say about Rainbow Tree. We've stayed there. The villa is light and airy and palatially spacious, with all manner of private spaces, lovely breezes off the sea - especially, it seems, at poolside, where the sea winds gently rustle the thatched roofs of the sun shelters. (Oh, and there's a great library of interesting books!)

Mornings, the ladies - organized, friendly, unobtrusive, gracious and accommodating, arrive to fix whopping breakfasts - freshly-squeezed orange juice, fruit, and the best scrambled eggs and french toast ever! And now, drooling and remembering, I'll write my check for those raffle tickets!

A big up to the Kennedys for their generous donation of a week at the villa, and for arranging all the other goodies in this year's package, and for all their time, energy, and expertise that they bring to bear on such a worthwhile cause!

Rainbow Tree Villa is located in Billys Bay and has nearly 500 feet of beachfront on a wide sandy beach that extends for almost 3/4 mile. There are only 5 villas on the entire beach. The Billys Bay fishing fleet resides at the easternmost end of the beach and Rainbow Tree Villa is at the western end of the beach. There is a reef offshore, nearly the entire length of the beach, protecting the shoreline.

Imangine all your worries dissolved before your eyes and every moment of your life is peaceful, enjoyable and folks treating you like you want to be treated is just what Treasure Beach and this Raffle has to offer. As we like to say, we are going back home on May 13th for 10 days of love, laughter and relaxation. This will be our fourth trip in the last five years and I cannot say enough wonderful things about Rainbow Tree, the staff at Rainow Tree and Treasure Beach. From the momement you arrive you will be greeted by the most wonderful people (staff)that I have ever known. Ms. Laura and Ms. Jenny are the most loving people you would ever meet. Rainbow Tree is the bonus! To wake up in the morning, sit at the pool and watch the sunrise and then to set on the veranda and watch the sun set over the ocean is one of the most beautiful sites you will ever see. I been fortunate to travel many places in the world and have made Rainbow Tree/Point my one place I will go to every year. God willing. Rainbow Tree is full of color, open and very comfortable. The house sits about 100 yards from the sea. No tourist (since I like to think I am a local now)no rush, no getting ready for dinner. I often get asked what I like best about Rainbow Tree and Treasure Beach, my response, "If you want the most relaxing, stress free vaction" go to Rainbow Tree and let your worries fade. For my friends and adopted family at Rainbow Tree/Point and Treasure Beach, I will see you soon. If anyone would like to contact me to discuss further, please feel free to send me an eamil.

My husband and I visited Treasure Beach two years ago and stayed in Rainbow Tree for what was one of the best vacations of our life. You cannot go wrong here. House is beautiful, well equiped with anything you might need, and its in the perfect setting. The beach and view are lovely. The pool is awesome - i hardly left my pool chair. The staff are just lovely - very discreet, very thoughtful (thinking of things you need before you even know you need them), warm and friendly. If you want to visit with them, they are delighted to tell you about Jamaica and their lives there. If you prefer privacy, they melt into the background. We also spent time doing some sightseeing and attending the Calabash Literary Festival - all excellent. We love this place so much that my friends and I are buying multiple raffle tickets in hopes of winning. Whether you win or not -- I strongly urge you to buy raffle tickets. This is a most deserving community and these kids definitely can't get the schooling any other way.

Rainbow Tree is the best. I have returned every year since 2002 for a stay of 2 weeks. The staff is wonderful and so helpful, gentle and kind. They all aim to please and make your vacation the best you have ever had. You can sit by the pool and watch the sea. There is a wonderful hammock in a tree in the front yard with a view of the sea. The rooms are large and comfortable. It is very spacious. There are screens on every window and air-conditioning as well as ceiling fans. The meals are to die for. The staff will prepare anything you wish but I always choose to eat Jamaican so they fix what they would eat at home, delicious. On one of my visits, I had a slight fever for a day or two. The excellent staff brought me Jamaican peppermint tea and had cool water soaked wash cloths for my head. Though I wasn't that sick, Miss laura came to check on me every so often. I felt like she was my mom and it was so nice. I'm buying tickets and so are my friends and family. You couldn't ask for a better opportunity plus the children are so deserving and work very hard to earn a scholarship. Rainbow Tree is awesome, the best, I plan to keep returning for years to come.

Wonderful place. We stayed elsewhere in Treasure Beach two years prior, and this experience was even nicer than the first place. The villa itself is wonderful. The big difference may be the staff. Incredible. They seem to anticipate your needs and you never feel as if you are imposing on them. They LOVE their jobs. The pool was cleaned each morning before we could get out there. We were asked what we'd like for lunch before we realized we were hungry. They found little friends for our children. My husband went nuts over the great desserts - especially the key lime pie. We literally shed tears when it was time to leave.

This scholarship program is wonderful. Buy a ticket. Buy 5. Do what you can to help the kids.

Here's what one scholarship recipient, an honor roll student who is finishing his third year at Munro on a Treasure Beach Foundation scholarship, says what receiving this scholarship has meant to him and his family:

"This scholarship has really been a driving force for me to do my best and maximize my abilities. It has also helped my family financially because the school fees and book prices have skyrocketed. It has also given my mother the opportunity to better meet her financial obligations now that the inflation rate is so high."

In the coming days, I will post quotes from other TBF scholarship students so you can see what these scholarships really mean. It is only through your purchase of raffle tickets or donations that talented and deserving students like this young man can have the opportunities they do.

One of our newest scholarship recipients is finishing her first year at Black River High School. She is first in her class !!

This young lady says, "I would like to say thanks to the many people who donated to Treasure Beach Foundation. It really means a lot to me and to my family because it helped financially." When asked what would have happened if she had not received a scholarship, she said, "Maybe I would not have tried hard enough to keep up my grades."

Having stayed at Rainbow Tree twice, we seem to have caught the Treasure Beach bug and are soon coming back yet again to this amazing place. There really are no words adequate to describe the experience as we've never been anyplace like it. The villa is huge, with million dollar views from both terrace and pool areas. The staff lovingly care for you like one of their own. Each meal is better than the last, and seem to miraculously appear just as you're starting to feel hungry. The laid back atmosphere is so removed from the fast-paced world, that we believe it is as close to total inner peace as it gets. Our kids say it's the best vacation they ever had.

The villa alone is amazing, but with so many other great perks included, this is really an incredible package. Either way, the children of Treasure Beach are the real winners here, some of whom we've met in person - bright, beautiful, and so deserving of this scholarship opportunity.

Suzanne & Otis Nelson

150 years ago the philanthropy of Robert Hugh Munro and Caleb Dickenson kindled a fire on the altar of learning that has never been extinguished...The power of learning kindled is the power of Hampton School; an all girls High School located in Malvern District, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, which continues to successfully prepare well-rounded young ladies age 12 to 18 for the wider world.

Hampton School continues to succeed not only because of our dedicated staff and co-operative parents but largely because of our sponsors and supporters - sponsors like the Treasure Beach Foundation (TBF). Hampton School is privileged to have five of the TBF scholarship recipients enrolled - one finishing her third year now. It is evident that the students and their parents are extremely grateful to the foudation for its assistance.Without it, their challenges would be great.

Thank you Treasure Beach Foundation for assisting our efforts to provide quality education for our children!

Turey, sorry for the delay in responding to your questions. I had to consult with our bank on one of them, and banks are a bit less cooperative than they used to be.

The answers:

Yes, we can accept a Canadian bank draft so long as it is made out in U.S. dollars.

Whoever wins the raffle will have a year in which to use it. The winner can select his or her week (Saturday to Saturday) on a space-available basis, meaning when it is not already committed to another group.

Susan, it came through as a raffle ticket. I know the form is a bit odd, but as long as you check "Raffle Ticket" at the end that's what gets reported to us. (I'll e-mail you exactly what we receive so you can see it for yourself.)

Thanks very much for your support!

We'll be starting to mail out all the tickets by this weekend.

"I would probably not go to Hampton or after awhile move from Hampton to another school which is more affordable," says another of our scholarship recipients. She adds, "The scholarship means a lot to my family and me. Currently my Mom is out of a job, and the money from the scholarship is especially helpful. We consider it a gracious gift and are thankful for it. As time passes, it gets harder to find the money needed to pay for various things, one of which is school."

In closing, she says, "I would like to say a special thank you to all the persons whose donations have made my scholarship possible. Your generosity has afforded me the privilege of attending the school of my dreams. I know times are difficult and money is hard to find, yet you all make the effort. My family and I are very grateful."

This young lady had a wonderful average at Hampton her first year, earning a Gold Award. We expect she will earn another this year--her second year of being on scholarship, as her grades continue to be excellent.

This is the kind of student your raffle tickets and donations support.

“I would like to thank the Foundation for providing such an opportunity. As a student at Sandy Bank, I always wanted to attend Munro College. I worked diligently in my GSAT to earn a spot at this top institution. But knowing about such a scholarship and how it would take a burden off my family, I worked even harder. Now that my dream has come through, I realize not only did the scholarship remove the burden my high school expense, but it made me feel worthwhile, and it made my family proud.”

These are the words of yet another of our fine scholarship students.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Karen on Friday, May 08, 2009 - 10:25 am: Edit Post

Everyone will not have their tickets by when the drawing takes place the evening of May 20; that would be impossible with tickets still being purchased up through midnight our time (Washington, DC time) on May 18. But, the winner will be selected from "our half" of each ticket purchased, including those purchased late the evening of May 18. So, if we have your money, you have the same chance of winning --whether or not you have received your ticket.

We will do our best to locate the winner and e-mail or call her or him. That's why we are asking that everyone who sends in a check please also includes their telephone number and e-mail address.

As soon as we are able to do that, the winner's name will be announced. If we cannot locate the winner quickly, we will post the winning ticket number here (and perhaps the winner's city or state), but we won't post their name until they give us permission.

Completing her second year at STETHS (St. Elizabeth Technical High School), this scholarship student excels in both academics and athletics. Without her scholarship, she says, "It would have been difficult financially for my parents to afford the school fees, books, uniforms, etc. The scholarship means a lot to my family because it has helped ease the financial pressure off my family and give me a chance to do better in my school work. It has also inspired me to work hard and make Treasure Beach Foundation a proud sponsor." She would like to "say thanks to the many people who donated money towards my scholarship."

Please understand the cost of sending a child to one year of public high school in Jamaica exceeds $US2,000. You can realize how difficult--if not impossible--this is for most Treasure Beach families. We ask you to do what you can to continue to support these wonderful students and to enable us to award even more scholarships this June.

Thank you for playing your part in providing educational opportunities for the youth of Treasure Beach.

When purchasing tickets online, be certain you specify raffle tickets at the end (where you have a choice between making a donation and raffle tickets). Even though the page you see says "donation," what we receive here says "raffle tickets." I cannot explain why the system does this because I truly do not know.

If you have any doubts as to whether or not we received the correct paperwork from our online processor, send me an e-mail and I'll respond as quickly as possible.

I am sorry for any inconvenience, and I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from buying tickets. (This is not the first such inquiry, so I realize people are getting justifiably confused.)

If your check arrives on the 19th--no matter from where, it cannot be used to enter you in the raffle. Checks must arrive in the mail on or before the 18th. If we receive a check after that, we will ask you if you wish it to be used as a donation; if not, we will return it to you. We cannot sell any tickets after the deadline. If you have any doubts whatsoever, please buy your tickets online (up through midnight Washington, DC time on the 18th).

As an FYI, if your check if coming from abroad, it must be a bank draft drawn in U.S. funds; the only way we can accept non-U.S. funds is via an online purchase.

The first batch of tickets has just been taken to the post office for pickup first thing Monday morning. I am curious to know when they arrive--and would appreciate a short posting from the first persons to receive their tickets from the East Coast, Midwest, and Western states; I also like to know when tickets start to arrive in Canada and Europe. Thanks!

I would like to encourage all who care about the future of Treasure Beach, particularly our young people, to buy a raffle ticket or make a donation to support Treasure Beach Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.

We will learn which students receive a scholarship for the next school year in mid June. This will be the fourth consecutive year TBF has awarded scholarships.

Since this program began, it has motivated our students to work harder. They are aware and extremely appreciative that people they do not even know have a deep interest in their well-being. These scholarships provide educational opportunities for students whose families could not afford the economic burden. Finally, these scholarships help enable outstanding students to attend the school of their choice; they are no longer limited by what is affordable.

The Rainbow Tree Villa website must have been updated during the raffle. All of a sudden, the picture of their sweet little outside kitchen is on the villa tour. It looks like a tiny church. Based on the food we ate - no, devoured - from it, I would say it's a Temple of Delicious Food.

Norma Moxam.
I wish to ask everyone to buy a ticket in support of a worthy cause. So many children have benefitted from the scholarship fund its amazing. These children are doing well in school and are forever grateful for what the Treasure Beach Foundation is doing for them.I know for sure that the money is well spent. So buy a ticket and give someone else a chance to be an assess to this country.

Another very positive item …

This young lady is completing her second year at Hampton, one of the finest schools in Jamaica. Her favorite subject is mathematics because it “makes you think, interpret, and understand better.”

She says without her scholarship, she “would not have been able to attend school on a regular basis.” This 13-year-old added, “I am trying hard so that I can always be in line to continue getting this scholarship. I am hoping the ‘global meltdown’ doesn’t affect the persons that are assisting us so they can continue to help us reach our goals in life.”

She understands how tough things are and thanks all the raffle ticket buyers and donors for their generosity. As she says, “The money that was donated could have benefited yourselves, but you all put us before your own needs.”

If you doubt your money can make a difference, read this again.

Can you imagine having a daughter who works so hard to do well in school, manages to achieve excellent grades—and is definitely university material, but you cannot even afford to send her to the eighth grade on a regular basis?

If you have not yet bought your ticket, please do so today.

Miss Kennedy could you tell us how the raffle sales are going. Will there be enough funds for the children?

My $100 soon come. It's not much, but it's all I can afford this year.

The raffle sales are going well. It's hard to say if there will be "enough" because there are still five days left to purchase tickets. I really cannot complain about our sales so far; instead, I am exceedingly appreciative. Though many people are spending less, we seem to have participation from more people. A lot of that is due to people being kind enough to spread the word among their friends and relatives.

Many people mailing checks are sending little notes. One I received today was especially touching. It said, "All the student scholarship recipients are the real winners."

Without the scholarship, this young lady admits her parents "would have had a very hard task ahead of them with the financial obligations that come with a high school education." She says she "is most grateful" to the many people who donated money for her scholarship.

This star pupil adds, "My family and I were very elated because upon obtaining this scholarship the financial burden was lifted, and we are now able to start saving for my university fund. It is a nice feeling knowing that as long as I maintain a good average, my school finances will be met."

Treasure Beach Foundation scholarship winners are required to tutor a student from outside their household an average of an hour a week -- one way of "paying it forward." This Hampton student has chosen to tutor two students for this entire school year.

She is yet another shining example of how this program is developing some of the future leaders of Treasure Beach.

An honor student at Hampton, now finishing her third year on a Treasure Beach Foundation scholarship, this young lady says her scholarship "has helped to alleviate the financial drain my family was experiencing. This, as my mother, the breadwinner, was earning the minimum wage."

She goes on to say, "I would like to extend my most sincere and profound gratitude to the supporters for their generous donations. Words cannot fully extend my appreciation."

When I last checked, the Jamaican minimum wage was the equivalent of $1.14 U.S. per hour. High school costs more than $2,000.00 U.S. per year. YOU DO THE MATH. THEN PLEASE BUY A RAFFLE TICKET OR MAKE A DONATION.

"I would like to say a big thank you to the many people who donated money for my scholarship. Achieving this scholarship has influenced me to study harder and work better. Without you this would be impossible. Without the scholarship, it would be difficult in terms of paying my school fees and buying all the tools and equipment for school"

This 12-year-old young lady is completing her first year at STETHS (St. Elizabeth Technical High School) with excellent grades. Her educational goal is "to be more qualified to get employment to lift up my standards of living."

She takes public transportation to and from school each day. She must bring lunch money each day.

The sad truth is attendance at schools is often low and sporadic because the families must make a day-to-day determination on whether they can afford to send their child to school the next day. This is often based on such factors as whether or not the father came back from sea the night before with enough fish to sell -- or if the seas were sufficiently calm for him to even go out in a fishing boat.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS RAFFLE WILL ALLEVIATE THE STRESS OF AN EXCELLENT STUDENT WORRYING WHETHER OR NOT THERE WILL BE MONEY FOR SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY.

How and when will the winner be notified?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Karen Kennedy on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 - 06:25 am: Edit Post

To answer questions:
• Dennis, yes, we got your money; your tickets were taken to the Post Office on Sunday.
• The drawing for the winning ticket will take place tomorrow evening (Wednesday, May 20).

Notifying the winner:
• We will attempt to locate the holder of the winning ticket, both by telephone and e-mail. If we are able to do so, and they agree, we will publish their name on TB.net late Wednesday night.
• If we cannot reach the winner, we will publish the winning ticket number—and the city from which he or she purchased the winning ticket.

If we do not have your phone number and e-mail address: Please send me an e-mail with this info today. (You can reach me at Karen@TreasureBeachFoundation.org.)
• If you bought your tickets online, look at your computer-generated receipt. If it does not have your phone number on it, we don’t have it. (We have the e-mail addresses of all who purchased online.)
• If you sent us a check and are not sure you enclosed both your e-mail address and phone number with it, send me an e-mail with this info.

To everyone who either bought raffle tickets or made a donation, we—on behalf of the students of Treasure Beach—sincerely thank you for supporting the Scholarship Program.

241 individuals cared enough to either purchase a ticket or make a donation. This wonderful outpouring of support, combined with our ongoing fundraising efforts, means we should have sufficient funds to continue to support those current scholarship recipients who fulfill their requirements. It also means we will be able to award additional scholarships this June.

Very special thanks go to each member of our Board of Directors and Board of Advisors.

Finally, this villa raffle would not have been possible without the outstanding support from the Treasure Beach businesses and residents who generously donated their time and services to make this year’s raffle offering the best ever.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

We have a winner!!

The winner of the 2009 villa raffle is Beverly Nerenberg of Gaithersburg, Maryland. (She held ticket #320.)

When I called her, she couldn’t believe she’d won. When I assured her she did, she said, “I am so excited. I never thought I’d win. I really entered to support the Foundation.”

“I’ve been to Rainbow Tree but I haven’t been able to afford an international trip for ages. I cannot believe I’ll get to go back to one of my favorite places in the world and be with such incredible people. I am so thrilled to be able to see everyone again.”

We at Treasure Beach Foundation know Bev and her group will have a wonderful trip. Just as a reminder, she has won:

• One week for up to 10 people in 5 large bedrooms at Rainbow Tree Villa.
• 15 pounds of fresh fish.
• Transfers to and from the airport in MoBay.
• A cruise for up to 10 on the Shallow Bar.
• A boat trip to Floyd’s Pelican Bar—and a fish lunch for up to 10.
• A private van to and from YS Falls—and admission to the park for us to 10.
• A signature facial and a signature massage (one each) at Driftwood Spa.
• Dinner for two at MarBlue’s SeaSide Restaurant.

Again, we thank everyone who bought tickets and gave donations.

Treasure Beach Foundation currently has 13 students on scholarship at Black River High School, Hampton School, Munro College, and St. Elizabeth Technical High School. Assuming each of these students fulfills his or her requirements, their scholarships will be renewed for the 2009-2010 school year.

We will be awarding additional scholarships to new students this June for the 2009-2010 school year.

Hi -- I am the incredibly lucky winner of the raffle!! I have been to Rainbow Tree in the past, but haven't been able to go in many years. I have even communicated, by mail, to some of the lovely people I met there. I always buy raffle tickets because I think what Karen and Peter Kennedy are doing for these children is beyond wonderful and it has been my pleasure to contribute in some small way. And NOW, to be able to go for FREE is quite extraordinary, to say the least! Thank you so much, Kennedys, for the opportunity, and thank you, mostly, for all the fabulous things you do for these children. The pictures of their beaming faces say it all.
I can't wait to get there again!!!
